Science: Properties of Materials

This module focuses on the properties of materials that determine whether they are useful or harmful. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the physical and chemical properties of materials to determine their uses. The module defines useful materials as those that serve a purpose and can be reused, recycled, or recovered from. It provides examples of useful materials like empty bottles, fruit peels, and scratch paper that can be reused or recycled. The module teaches students to identify, classify, and properly dispose of useful and harmful materials found at home.

3 Physical Properties of Matter

* ENVIRONMENT * INJURY * RECYCLED

* HARMFUL * LANDFILL * DUMPED
* PESTICIDES * POLLUTE * RECOVERED
* USEFUL * DECOMPOSED * KNIFE
* TOXIC * PURPOSE * WOOD

Objectives:

1. Define physical property

2. Enumerate the physical properties of matter.
3. Classify materials based on the physical property they belong.

Directions: Draw if it is a harmful material and ☺ if not.

__________ 1. gasoline __________ 6. pesticide

Properties of matter can be classified as physical or chemical. Physical

properties can be observed without any changes in its composition such as hardness,
brittleness, flexibility, elasticity, conductivity, malleability, and ductility. On the other
hand, chemical properties are characteristics that can only be observed when the
composition of materials has changed. Combustibility, flammability, and
biodegradability are some examples of chemical properties.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER

• Transforming form one state of matter without changing its composition.

These are the different properties of matter.

Hardness is the ability of a material to nr rigid and resist pressure that

may cause deformation or change in its shape.

ex. metal wood diamond

Brittleness is the ability of solid materials that when subjected to

high pressure or stress, they tend to crumble or break easily

ex. Glass porcelain mirror

Flexibility is the ability of a material to be bent without breaking.

ex. thin metal wires plastic strings

23
Elasticity is the ability of a material to be stretched and the return to
its original form

ex. rubber band garter

Conductivity is the ability of a material to allow heat and electricity

to pass through it.

ex. metal copper wire

Malleability is the ability of a material to be formed into different shapes.

e.x gold aluminium silver

Ductility is the ability of a material to be drawn into thin wires.

ex. electrical wires

Porosity is the ability of a material to absorb liquid well.

ex. paper cloth

DAY 1.

Directions: Classify the following materials based on the physical

properties they have.
