Lesson
2
Evaluating a Functions

SHS Learning Module

GOLDEN GATE COLLEGES
Senior High School Department

Introduction

At the end of this lesson the student will be able to

 Evaluate a function using function notation using function notation.
 Interpret the meaning of x and f(x) from ordered pairs and an
equation.
 Identify and write functions related to formulas

Development
 SUBTSTITUTE ME !
Evaluate the function f ( x )=x 2+5x-4 for each replacement value of x.
a. 2
b. 0
c. -4
d. 5
e. -1
f. -3
g. -2

 How to evaluate a function?

When a function f is defined by y=f (x), then x is called the dependent
variable . Any element of the domain can be chosen as value of
independent variable. The resulting value determines the corresponding
value of the dependent variable y.
The value of the dependent variable y=f (x) that corresponds to a specific
values on an independent variable x is found by substituting x into the
function rule, then, simplifying the resulting expression such process is
called evaluating function.
Rule in Evaluating Function

Replace every x in the function rule f (x) with the given

replacement value, then, simplify the resulting numerical
expression.

EXAMPLE
 Evaluate the function f ( x )=x 2+3x-2 for each replacement value of x.
a. -3
b. 0
c. 2

SOLUTION:
a. If x=-3, then
f (−3 )=−3+3(-3)-2
¿ 9+( -9)-2
= -2

b. If x=0 ,then
f ( 0 )=02 +3 (0) -2
¿ 0+0 -2
= -2

c. If x=2, then
f ( 2 ) =22+3 (2) -2
¿ 4+ 6 -2

d. If x=3, then
f ( 3 )=32+3 (3) -2
¿ 9+ 9 -2

A very important quantity in calculus is the expression:

f ( x+ h )−f ( x )
h

DIFFERENCE QUOTIENT
This quantity is called difference quotient. Specifically, the difference quotient is used in
the rate of exchange, a fundamental concept in calculus.

EXAMPLE
1 the difference quotient for each of the following function.
Find
a. f (x ) = 3x -1 b. f(x)= x2
c. f (x ) = √ x+ 3 d. f (x ) = 2x2 + x - 3

SOLUTION :
Replace x in function rule with the entire expression within the parentheses, then,
simplify the resulting expression.

a. f ( x ) = 3x -1

f ( x +h ) =3 ( x+h )−1=(3 x+3 h−1)
