3Rd Graduate Research Colloquium Theme: R & D: Going Beyond Limits
Objectives
1. Impart knowledge and intellectual rights, new technologies and publication which
could eventually create a better window of opportunities for the students;
2. Create additional insights in the development of the students’ papers;
3. Provide a forum for a wider dissemination of graduate theses special problems and
projects; and
4. Develop the presentation skills of graduate students by exposing them to an academic
conference atmosphere.
Rules
Participants
All masters and doctoral students who are currently enrolled in any CLSU graduate
programs;
Recent graduates (masters/doctoral) of CLSU from 2017 to 2019.
Recent graduates’ theses and students, whose theses or special projects are
scheduled for official final defense before the end of this semester, as confirmed
by their advisers, are qualified for presentation. Furthermore, they have to be
recommended by their advisers before they can present in the colloquium.

o Deadline of submission of recommendation form and personal information (GRC
Forms 1 & 2): March 15, 2019
o Announcement of the three (3) finalists per category will be on March 22, 2019

o Announcement of posters for competition: March 22, 2019
o Deadline of submission of the competing posters: April 9, 2019.
o Deadline of submission of abstract and summary of the paper (e-mail
submission): March 29, 2019

Abstract Specifications
1. The abstract should not be more than 300 words and must include at most five (5)
key terms, the research problem, methods, initial results and recommendations.
2. The abstract must be in MS Word format, using Times New Roman font, size 12 (see
GRC Form 1) and encoded in A4 bond paper with 1 inch margin on each side.
3. The abstract must be accompanied by short professional information of the student
(see GRC Form 1)
1. Summary of the thesis/special problem/ special project will be required from each
presenter. This is to allow the panelists/reviewers to have a good and more detailed
picture of the study.
2. The summary shall be encoded in letter size 8”x11” paper, in Times New Roman font,
size 12, in 2.0 line spacing.
3. The summary shall include the following: Introduction, Statement of the Problem,
Specific Objectives, Conceptual and/or Theoretical Framework, Methodology, Results
and Discussion, Conclusions, Recommendations and References (APA Style).

Guidelines for Paper Submission
o Submitted papers should not have been submitted, reviewed, or accepted for
publication in any peer-reviewed journal at the time of submission.
o Only one entry per author/s will be considered in the competition.
o The criteria for the pre-screening will be as follows:
Contribution to the body of knowledge - 50%
Relevance to the Theme - 25%
Organization - 25%
o Only three papers per category will be selected as finalists.
o Non-finalists will be presented as poster.
o Members of the Best Paper Award Committee shall not join the competition or
shall not be advisers of students competing for the Best Paper.
o Only one (1) best paper will be awarded per category with a cash prize of PhP
4,000.00

Presentation
o The participant should be in the venue 15 minutes before the start of the
session.
o Each participant is given 15-20 minutes for presentation.
o After the presentation of all participants, a 20-minute moderated open forum
follows to allow time for clarifications and suggestions from the panel
members and the audience.
o Powerpoint slides are required as visual aid for presentation. A soft copy of
the presentation should be given to the moderator 15 minutes before the
start of the session.
o The Powerpoint presentation should not exceed 20 slides, excluding the slide
bearing the dissertation/thesis/special problem/ special project title. Back-up
slides bearing data may be prepared as the panelists may require additional
information on the study during the open forum.
o The slides, once projected, should be readable up to a distance of 12 meters.
o The presentation should include the following: research objectives, brief
background, rationale, conceptual/theoretical framework, methods, findings,
and if possible, conclusions and implications/recommendations of the study.
o For the final judging, the criteria for selection of the Best Oral Paper shall be as
follows:
Delivery/Presentation - 35%
Content - 30%
Ability to answer questions - 25%
Time management - 10%
o The decision of the committee is final and shall be respected. The committee
shall not entertain questions regarding the selection of the winners.

Poster Competition
Components

Contestants should print the poster into a 30" by 40" (76 cm x 102 cm) tarpaulin, laid
in portrait.
The title of poster should be in all caps and centered, except for scientific names that
should be written in italics. Use letters equivalent to 72 points (about 2 cm) for the
main title and 40 points (less than 1 cm) for the subtitle.
On the main title a footnote must indicate ” Poster presented during the 2019
Graduate Research Colloquium at Dr. Danilo G. Tan Hall, Central Luzon State
University on April 10, 2019”. The size of the footnote should be legible within 1
meter distance. Author's or authors' name/s should be in full, all caps and
centered. Use 40 points.
Affiliation/address should be written in caps and lower case, italics and centered.
For the text, type letters that are legible within two-meter distance should be
used. Simple typeface, upper and lower case standard letters, in no more than
two colors should also be used.
Good color combination is a dark type on a light background because it is easier to
read.
Illustrations, tables, graphs, & photographs should be 5” x 7" (12.5 cm x 18 cm).
Labels and captions on illustrations should be readable within two meters.

Design and aesthetics (10 points): Appropriate use of color and design
Title, headings, labels: Appropriate size, location, spelling, and content
Choice of visual: Appropriate for the audience and the message being
conveyed
Design: Aesthetically pleasing, limited clutter, good use of color
contrast
Clarity: Appropriate balance of function and design
Each student should have prepared an oral discussion of his or her exhibit. This discussion
must not exceed 5 minutes. The oral presentation should be clear and concise, and should
include the major points presented on the poster. If the student worked with collaborators
on the project, including his or her adviser, this presentation should clearly describe the
student's role in the overall project. Students should be ready to answer questions from
judges and other viewers.
