An Opinion Essay On Facial Recognition

Facial recognition systems provide both benefits and risks. While they can increase safety in public places like airports by identifying criminals and terrorists, and speed up processes like verification at airports, they can also infringe on privacy if ordinary people have access and can find private information about others without consent. The author argues that facial recognition should only be available to large organizations, not individuals, to balance these pros and cons.

An Opinion Essay on Facial Recognition

Do you still think that facial recognition systems are available only for
governmental organizations? Clearview AI is an American company which
provides access to a facial recognition application which is used by large
companies, law enforcement, educational organizations and individuals. Ordinary
people also could use this application. Is facial recognition more useful or harmful?

One of the benefits of facial recognition is safety. This system provides
safety to billions of people by identifying criminals or terrorists in public places.
Police could easily find suspicious people who act illegally. For example, facial
recognition is popular in airports. It is obvious that airplanes are the means of
transport which is the most dangerous and vulnerable to terrorist attacks. It is a big
risk because hundreds of people could be victims of someone’s ambitions.
Furthermore, it is impossible to eliminate terrorists once the plane is in the air,
which creates additional risk. Therefore, in that case, facial recognition systems are
useful and necessary.

The next aspect should be emphasized is faster processing. It is obvious that

people slow in comparison with technology. In the century of informational
revolution, it is important to get any data fast than others including verification of a
person. Let is consider the same example in the airport. Person could not delay
their plane or came to the airport 7 hours in advance. Even with facial recognition
system it takes over 3 hours which is also much time and imagine if specialists
would search for information manually. That is why, facial recognition systems are
necessary. You have to save your and others time.

On no account private aspects of human’s life should be ignored. In the 21st
century, privacy is the most valuable part of life because technological
developments have provided numerous social networks where people could find
information about each other. For instance, if a new student were transferred to a
group, other students in that group could take photos of him and use facial
recognition to find out a lot of information about him or her, from his or her
birthday to which school graduated from. It is totally unethical because in that case
people should build relationships, make friends and share only that information
which they consider as suitable. That is why, in that case, facial recognition
systems can be harmful. However, it will be solved if ordinary would not have an
access to face recognition applications.

Taking everything into consideration, I think that FR systems have to be

available to large organizations, but not to individuals. What is your opinion about
FR system availability?
