MT/M-20 Design of Advanced Concrete Structures MTSE-114A: Roll No. .......................... Total Pages: 02

This document contains instructions for a design assignment for an advanced concrete structures course. It lists 7 questions related to designing various reinforced concrete structural elements like shear walls, beams, columns, and corbels. The questions provide loading and geometric specifications for each element and ask students to design the reinforcements using specified concrete grades and rebar types based on Indian code IS 456.

DESIGN OF ADVANCED CONCRETE
STRUCTURES
MTSE-114A
Time : Three Hours] [Maximum Marks : 60

Note : Attempt Five questions in all, assume any data suitably,

if missing and state clearly.

1. Design a shear wall of a 3 storey building having floor to

floor height as 3 m. The length of wall is 3.2 m and thickness
is 200 mm is subjected to the following loading :

Axial Force Moment

Loading Shear (kN)
(kN) (kNm)
DL + LL 2800 750 70
Seismic
370 4840 930
Load

Use M-25 concrete and Fe 500 Steel.

2. Design a rectangular beam of section 300 mm wide

535 mm effective depth subjected to the following factored
loads : bending moment of 50 kNm, shear of 50 kN and
torsion of (a) 20 kNm, and (b) 40 kNm. Assuming M 20
concrete and Fe 415 steel, design the reinforcements as
per IS 456. Assume effective cover of 35 mm.

3. Design a simply supported, 270 mm thick RC vertical
deep beam of height 3.5 m, which is supported over
500 mm wide piers having a clear spacing of 4.5 m. The
beam carries a service superimposed load of 180 kN/m.
Assume M-20 grade concrete and steel of grade Fe 415.

4. Design a corbel to carry a factored load of 500 kN at a

distance of 200 mm from the face of a 300 × 300 mm
column. Assume M-30 concrete and Fe 500 Steel.

5. Design a beam-column carrying compression of 400 kN

at an eccentricity of 125 mm along the minor axis. Assume
that the ends of the column are hinged with an unsupported
length of 5 m. The grade of steel is E 250.

6. Explain in brief various types of loads to be considered

in the design on concrete structures.

7. Explain in detail the four stages of fatigue failure.

8. Derive the equation for predicting the critical stress of a

column with a cruciform cross section, due to torsional
buckling.
