Reconnaissance
and
Project Survey

What is Surveying?
• Surveying is a technique of finding the relative position of
different features on the surface by taking measurements and
finally representing them on a sheet of paper known as plan
or map.

• Surveying is a pro-active action for collecting

information/data for either enabling a decision making
process or for executing an activity in a Project

October 2, 2017 CE_103 Md. Azijul Islam 6

Project Surveying
• Project Surveying includes all field works and requisite
calculations together with maps, profiles and other related
drawings involved in planning and construction of any
engineering project.

• The project should be planned in such a way that it may be

constructed and operated with the greatest economy and
utility.

A Route/ Project Survey
Consists of Following Sequence
of Surveys
 Reconnaissance Survey or “REKI”

 Preliminary Surveys

 Detailed Engineering Survey or Location Survey

 Construction Survey

October 2, 2017 CE_103 Md. Azijul Islam 8

Reconnaissance Survey
 Carried out during Project Conceptual Stage

The details are required for Feasibility Report

 A technically feasible shortest & cost-effective route is identified

 Various important features and information about the route that may
affect the Project anyway are listed

 All the available maps of the territory should be collected and studied

October 2, 2017 CE_103 Md. Azijul Islam 9

Reconnaissance Survey (desk-top study)

Extensive use of existing maps

Few alternatives are chalked outs

Comparative merits/demerits are listed

GIS Packages are extremely helpful

Extensive Use of Satellite Imagery now-a-days

Preliminary Surveys
• The survey in which more precise information
is required for the choice of best location
for the project and to estimate the exact
quantities and costs of project is known as
Preliminary Survey.
• Preliminary Surveys are done along all the
possible routes.

October 2, 2017 CE_103 Md. Azijul Islam 11

Detail Engineering Survey or Project
Survey or Location Survey
• This activity is taken up during approval
stage, when approval is considered
almost certain
• Prior to this, route was on maps and
paper. This is the first field activity taken
up for Pipeline Projects

October 2, 2017 CE_103 Md. Azijul Islam 12

Detailed Route Survey
• In this activity, route is progressively staked on
ground preferably from one obligatory point and
demarcated with control points and related reference
points.
• Exact distances between control points,
deflection/included angles, elevations etc. are
accurately measured and recorded by
theodolite/total stations
• The levels are taken at every 50/10/5 M distance of
the staked route

Different project survey
• Irrigation project
• Hydrographic project
• Sewer Pipeline, canal, highways and railway
projects
• Tunnel Project
• House setting

Irrigation Project
Preliminary Survey:
Preliminary survey includes determination of the following:
a) Source of supply: Catchment area of the stream
b) Area of the land proposed to be irrigated
From
c) Possible sites of dams in a reservoir project
contour
d) Possible sites of weirs sluices, headways of canals and maps of
other hydraulic structures
the area
e) Alignment of canals
f) Quality of land and water for irrigation from taking
samples and testing in the laboratory
g) Collection of rainfall, gauge and discharge records of the
stream  from hydrological department
h) Possible corps and water requirements from agricultural
department
i) Drainage requirements

Irrigation Project
After collecting all the data, a project report
is prepared along with a rough cost of the
project.

Financial aspect is then examined and cost

benefit ratio is worked out

Irrigation Project
Detailed Survey:
After the feasibility of the project has been
established, detailed survey of the following is
essential:
a) Location of head works, guide bands,
alignment of canals, distributaries and water
courses
b) Location of falls, cross drainage works and
canal escapes
c) Alignment of drainage canal
d) In case of reservoir project, detailed
geological investigations should be made.
October 2, 2017 CE_103 Md. Azijul Islam 17
Irrigation Project
Construction survey:
The final construction survey includes the
following operations:
a) Topographical survey of the site, preparing
site plan for acquisition of land
b) Setting up of pillars for demarcation and also
to serve as reference line
c) Establishment on ground B.M. pegs for
carrying on construction and giving
alignment of the structure
d) Preparing running bills of the work executive
monthly
