Bangladesh
Abstract:
From this paper, the types of hedging devices and the similarities differences in their uses in
Bangladeshi English newspaper editorials. Using “Mixed Methods research” design, the study
editorials took from three major newspaper in Bangladesh. There were (1) The Daily Star, (2)
The New Age, (3) The Dhaka Tribune. These research paper helped to the reader 10 editorials
from these three newspaper had collected. that What types of hedging devices were found in the
English newspaper editorials in Bangladesh? and were there similarities or differences in the
hedging devices used among the English newspaper editorials. And also reader had been able to
understand about hedging device; they would not be be misguided. As hedging is an artistic
gadget, once in a while it is hard to comprehend for conventional individuals. This investigation
was pretty much as basic as each peruser would have the option to comprehend the significance
of abstract gadget and they could be get the right back rub.

Introduction:
Hedging is the use of linguistic devices to express hesitation or uncertainty as well as to
demonstrate politeness and indirectness. In Bangladesh there had many English Daily and an
editorial page also. In Bangladesh it was going to be the first work of “hedging”. Hedging had
been use for a long time in Bangladesh English daily. Each of every newspaper had there own
style to apply this device. By using hedging editorial was being more formal and acceptable to
reader. Authors could utilize supporting to diminish their responsibility to specific assertions. It
could likewise be utilized to consider talk local area values. Using hedging was also a writing
skill of writer. It made him/her more professional and standard. Paper articles stayed a road for
paper houses to project their suppositions, philosophies and fill in as a voice on consuming
social, political or financial issues in the public eye. Publications could likewise be utilized to set
plan, shift center and decide the way the country ought to pass by molding people groups'
assessments through a thoroughly examined correspondence. To do this, the news houses used
language as a significant apparatus for imparting these plans to their abounding perusers. The
promoters of the other viewpoint of hedges consider that the association of hedging with
vagueness or fuzziness could obscure some important function of hedging (cf. Salager-Meyer,
1993). Hedging was essential to paper articles in light of the fact that there were focuses in which
there would be requirements to introduce realities or strands of data which have not to be
demonstrated past a sensible uncertainty to general society.

Statement of the problem:


The problem of this statement is reader could be misguided for misunderstanding hedging
device. In this paper, the types of different hedging device in uses in top ranked English
Newspaper (The Daily Star,New Age, Dhaka Tribune) editorials of Bangladesh.
Theoretical Framework:

Salager- Meyer’s (1994) hedges categorisation. This hypothesis helps us in gathering fences into
various classes, their fundamental structures and their capacities. Prior to the rise of this
categorisation, the investigation of supports was to some degree dazzle toss sort of study as
various components could be featured by various analysts as supporting.

Significance of the study & Limitation:


From this study reader would be able to know the meaning about hedging device. Reader would
be able to understand the quality of our newspaper. As in editorial page, the researcher wrote
about the current and upcoming issue of Bangladesh in that case reader would not be misguided.

Research Questions:
1. What types of hedging devices were found in the English newspaper
editorials in Bangladesh?
2. Were there similarities or differences in the hedging devices used among the
English newspaper editorials?
Research Method:
In this paper, “Mixed Methods research” had applied. Mixed Methods Research integrates both
Qualitative and Quantitative Research. It provided a holistic approach combining and analyzing
the statistical data with deeper contextualized insights. Using Mixed Methods also enables
Triangulation, or verification, of the data from two or more sources. Mixed Method Research
would be applied because in this paper qualitative (newspaper writing, use of hedging and types
of hedging) and quantitative (How many newspaper use hedging) This both would be considerd.

Research Design:

In the paper, “Mixed Methods research” will be applied. There are four types of hedging.
1. Introductory Verb: Seem, tend, look like, appear, to be, think, belive, doubt, be sure,
indicate, suggest.
2. Certain Texcual verb: Believe, assume, suggest
3. Modal Adverb: Possibly, Perhaps, Conceivably.
4. That clause: It could be the case that….. , It might be suggested that, There is every hope
that.
In this paper, this hedging word will be finded out, qualitatively and quantitatively.

Sources of Data:

In this paper, three newspapers will be focused. There are (1) The Daily Star, (2) The New Age,
(3) The Dhaka Tribune. From these three newspaper, The Daily Star and The New age is printed
newspaper. The Dhaka Tribune is online newspaper. Printed news paper and online newspaper
both will help to make this research properly. From each newspaper, 3-4 editorial will be
consider as research’s data gathering material.
Data gathering procedure:

In this paper, From these ((1) The Daily Star, (2) The New Age, (3) The Dhaka Tribune)
newspaper data will be gathered. Online version and printed version both will be use for data
gathering.
