WMT PPT 4

The document describes the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) process for wastewater treatment. The UASB process uses a single reactor to combine sedimentation, anaerobic digestion, and sludge stabilization. Raw sewage enters the UASB reactor where anaerobic granular sludge breaks down organic matter, producing methane-rich biogas and nutrient-rich sludge. Effluent from the UASB reactor receives further aeration and polishing before chlorination and disposal or reuse. The UASB process has low costs and generates energy from captured biogas.

UP FLOW ANAEROBIC SLUDGE
BLANKET PROCESS

Up flow anaerobic sludge blanket process (UASB),was developed

by Lettinga and his co-workers in Holland in the early 1970's
Anaerobic granular sludge bed technology refers to a special kind
of reactor concept for the "high rate" anaerobic treatment of
wastewater.
OBJECTIVES

The major objectives of the UASB process is:

• Pre sedimentation anaerobic wastewater treatment and final

sedimentation including sludge stabilization are essentially
combined in one reactor making it most attractive high-rate
wastewater treatment option.
• To produce by products like Methane enriched biogas and
nutrient rich sludge.
PRIMARY TREATMENT OF SEWAGE

1.The inlet chamber will receive the raw sewage to pass to screen
channel and subsequently to the detritor tank.
2.In screen channel floating matters are trapped and removed.
3.In detritor tank grit is removed.
4.Now the sewage having been treated for screening and grit is
then passed to UASB reactor.
UASB PROCESS
• UASB reactor is the place where the separation of gas, liquid
and solids takes place. The reduction of BOD is 75%.
• In this process the whole waste water is passed through the
anaerobic reactor in an up flow mode with HRT of 8.8 hours.
• The up flowing sewage itself forms millions of small granules
of sludge which are in suspension and the excess sludge is
removed and taken to sludge pump house.
• Organic compounds get anaerobically biodegraded converting
it into methane enriched biogas.

AERATION

• The flow from UASB rector will be directed to aerated lagoon

to provide aeration and allow further settlement of suspended
solids of the effluent from UASB reactors.
• This aerator provide the oxygen to be decomposed along with
water by providing huge surface area. This resulting induction
of oxygen reduces the BOD load by further 75%.
• Detention period is 24hrs.
AERATED LAGOON
POLISHING POND

• Polishing ponds are used to improve the quality of effluents

from efficient UASB reactors, so that final effluent quality
becomes compatible with desired standards.
• It is mainly used to improve the hygienic quality.

BIOGAS:
•Floating type gasholders will be
provided in a concrete tank.
•Gas coming from pipe consists of
Methane,CO2,H2S.
•Only methane is used to generate
electricity.
SLUDGE:
•Sludge produced from the USAB
reactor will be digested sludge and
rich in nutrients which are
beneficial for plant growth.
ADVANTAGES
The following are the advantages of UASB:

• Produces easily de-water able excess sludge.

• Low energy consumption.
• Absence of noise and odour nuisance.
• Proven technology.
• Low initial investment and maintenance cost.
• Methane rich biogas production.
• Production of enriched nutrients sludge.
CONCLUSION

 Compare to other treatment plants UASB has
•capital, operation and maintenance cost
minimum.
• Uses waste to generate power.
 Treats the raw sewage and releases treated water to
•maintain river ecology.
 Turns waste water into water fit for irrigation.
