Earth and Space Science: Name

This document provides an activity to compare and contrast comets, meteors, and asteroids. Students are asked to complete a Venn diagram comparing the three, use a 3D solar system simulator to observe and answer questions about comets and asteroids, and answer essay questions about scientific interest in comets, asteroids, and meteorites as well as differences between meteorites and meteoroids. The activity aims to teach students about the characteristics of comets, asteroids, and meteors through interactive exercises and questions.

Earth and Space Science

Activity 1 – Comets, Meteors, and Asteroids

Name: ____________________________________________________

I. Compare and contrast comets, meteors, and asteroids using the Venn diagram. (15
max point )

ASTEROIDS

METEORS COMETS

II. Use the 3D Solar System Simulator and answer the following questions.

A. Comets
1. Name the comets that orbit near the inner part of the solar system.

2. What have you observed with the orbit of the comets? (You may check animate at
the left side)

3. Which comet is visible above or below the horizon from the Philippines? (Click the
comet name on the left side)

4. Select a comet. Name and screen capture the constellation where it is located.
(Click the interactive sky chart at Visibility Right Now portion)

5. Rank the comets based on the (1) coma diameter and (2) observed magnitude.
(Select a comet and see Comet Brightness in the bottom part)

B. Asteroids
1. Name 10 asteroids that are found near the inner planets. (Select an asteroid and
click 3D Orbit)

2. In what region most of the selected 10 asteroids located?

3. Name 5 asteroids that are found beyond the orbits of the outer planets.

4. What are the asteroids that can be viewed using binocular (based on the location
– Cagayan de Oro City/ El Salvador City)?

5. Select 2 asteroids from your answer in question no. 4. List their diameter (Click
information see Physical Data). Using the Asteroid Damage Visualisation Map,
select an area and click the approximate size of the asteroids. Then you're your
generalization.

III. Essay. Answer the questions concisely.

1. Why are scientists and researchers so interested in comets, asteroids, and
meteorites?

2. What are near-Earth asteroids? What do scientists hope to accomplish by identifying and
monitoring near-Earth asteroids?

3. If meteorites had stopped hitting the moon before the outer surface of the moon cooled, how
would the moon’s surface be different than it is today?

4. What is the difference between a meteoroid and a meteorite?

5. Why are meteorites easier to study than asteroids or comets?
