Assignment 5: Emerging Technologies
A. Explain the following Emerging Technologies:
1. Nanotechnology ● Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter with a size between 1 and 100 nanometers in diameter, known as nanoparticles. This technology uses nanoparticles to design and build new materials, components, and systems with improved or new properties. Nanotechnology is used across many science fields, including chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering. 2. Biotechnology ● Biotechnology is the technological utilization of biological systems and organisms to create products or modify processes for a particular use. It comprises various disciplines, including genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and more, which help improve our lives as new technologies and products are being developed using this technology. Biotechnology is applied in numerous areas, including agriculture, medicine, aquaculture fisheries, and more. 3. Blockchain Technology ● Blockchain technology is basically a digital ledger of transactions that is distributed across the entire network of computer systems. It is a technique of recording information that is resistant to alteration or hacking because it is protected using cryptography. This technology helps minimize risk, eliminate fraud, and bring transparency in a scalable way for countless uses. 4. Cloud and Quantum Computing ● Cloud computing is a way of networking remote servers hosted on the internet. This technology allows users to store and access data from any location at any time. There are various types of cloud infrastructure, and this includes public, private, and hybrid cloud. Cloud computing services are valuable and beneficial not only for the public but also for businesses and organizations as it provides cheap computing power and processes data more efficiently. Quantum computing, on the other hand, signifies the next generation of computing. This technology obtains its computing power by utilizing the power of quantum physics. Quantum computers have the capacity to handle complex numbers, thus, with it, data can be transferred over the internet with much more reliable encryption. Quantum cloud computing provides clients access to a quantum computer over the internet. 5. Autonomic Computing (AC) ● Autonomic computing is a subfield of computer science that concentrates on developing systems that run by themselves and is capable of high-level functioning. Autonomic computing systems can control the functioning of computer applications and systems without human intervention. Autonomic computing is an approach to address the complexity and development problems in software systems. 6. Computer Vision ● Computer vision is a subfield of artificial intelligence that focuses on automating tasks that the human visual system can do. Computer vision involves collecting, processing, interpreting digital images, and extracting high-dimensional data from the real world in order to provide useful information and formulate decisions. Computer vision also involves building algorithms that can recognize and interpret the content of images and utilize it for other applications. 7. Embedded Systems ● An embedded system is a combination of computer hardware and software designed to perform a specific function within a larger system. The embedded system can be programmable or have a fixed functionality. It controls many devices generally used today, such as consumer electronics, digital watches, and household appliances. 8. Cybersecurity ● Cybersecurity is a field that focuses on protecting computer systems against theft or damage to hardware, software, or electronic data. It is the application of technologies, processes, and practices designed to protect and secure networks, devices, programs, and data. Cybersecurity has become one of the significant challenges nowadays as cyber threats continue to rise at a rapid pace. 9. Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) ● Additive manufacturing or 3D printing involves the use of computer- aided design to create objects layer by layer. It encompasses various types of advanced manufacturing that are applied to form three- dimensional structures out of plastics, metals, polymers, and other materials. Additive manufacturing facilitates the production of moderate to mass quantities of products that can be customized individual.
