DEPARTMENT:Mechanical Engineering
COURSE CODE-COURSE NAME: ME-103-Fluid Mechanics I CR:3-0
COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course introduces students in mechanical engineering to the basic principles
underlying the behavior of liquids and gases at rest and in motion; it also enables them to analyze simple
fluid-flow systems.
This course is an introductory fluid mechanics course and is intended to provide a very strong foundation in
the fundamentals to prepare students for more specialized fluids-related courses in future.
These fundamentals include a strong emphasis on the integral form of the conservation laws (mass,
momentum, and energy), use of Bernoulli’s equation, similitude, and hydrostatics.
TEXT AND MATERIALS:
Textbooks:
1. Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics 6th edition by Munson - Young
Reference Material:
1. Fluid Mechanics by Y. Cengel, C. M. Cimbala
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Following PLOs are addressed in the course:
PLO-1: Engineering Knowledge: An Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science & engineering
to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PLO-2:Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex
engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural
sciences and engineering sciences.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
CLO-1: Define and relate physical and thermodynamic property data of fluids. (Cognitive, C1-
Remember)
CLO-2: Explain fluid phenomena with reasonable scientific logic and correctly interpret fluid related
problems. (Cognitive, C2-Understand)
CLO-3: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering to develop critical thinking process
and to develop pi terms and solve mass, momentum and energy balances. (Cognitive, C3-Understand)
