Cellular Organelles Worksheet

The document provides an overview of key cellular organelles including their structure and functions. It discusses the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, lysosomes, mitochondria, vacuoles, and chloroplasts. The main points are that the nucleus controls the cell, the ER synthesizes proteins and lipids, the Golgi complex modifies proteins for transport, lysosomes digest materials and degrade cells, mitochondria generate energy, vacuoles store materials, and chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis.

AP Biology 043 – Cellular Organelles

Video Review Sheet

www.bozemanscience.com/043-cellular-organelles

1. Introduction:
a. Role of nucleus: (2) The control center of the cell. Tells the other parts of the cell what to do.

b. ER: Endoplasmic reticulum

i. Rough has ...little ribosomes on it.
ii. Ribosomes function: Produces protein.

iii. Smooth ER responsible for (2) Responsible for making lipids and responsible for
breaking down the toxins.

c. Golgi complex: newly made proteins are transported here and can go: (2)
When newly made protein are transported they go to
different parts of the cell or outside the cell.

d. Lysosomes break
Lysosomes are produced in the Golgi complex and are important
in breaking down material when it is not used.
e. Vacuole is important in
Vacuole is important in storage.
f. Energy organelles:
i. Mitochondria for making : ATP
ii. Chloroplasts make: sugar

2. Ribosomes:
a. What are ribosomes made up of? (2)

Ribosomes are made up of proteins and RNA.

b. Where is it synthesized?
Ribosomes are synthesized in the nucleolus.
c. How many subunits make up a ribosome?
Two subunits make up a ribosome.
d. Why does mRNA go through the middle?
mRNA goes through the middle so it can be translated into sugar.
3. Endoplasmic Reticulum:
a. What is the ER usually attached to?
The ER is usually attached to the right side of the nucleus.
b. Rough ER has ribosomes on it so: it can synthesize proteins.

c. Smooth ER is where lipids are synthesized. (Mentioned above) :so it doesn't have ribosomes on the outside
d. The function of the ER is to be a lattice so cells can : build things.

4. Golgi Complex:
a. Tell about some of the accomplishments of Camillo Golgi
Camillo Golgi found the Golgi Complex, and won the Nobel Prize for staining cells, but he was most famous for
using staining features to discover the Golgi apparatus.

b. Purpose: takes information that is made in the ER and

: then it shifts those to different parts of the cell

5. Lysosome:
a. Purposes: (3 discussed)

:Lysosome digest material, dissolves mitochondria that's not working, and can even kill cells.

b. Why is it referred to as the “suicide sack”?

It is referred to as the "suicide sack" because it dissolves, breakdown, digest, and kills
different material.

6. Mitochondria:
a. Purpose:
The membrane is where the chemical reactions occur and the matrix is where the fluid is held.

b. Why is their folding on the cristae and why is that significant?

There are folding on the cristae so there is space in the mitochondria where the protons can build up on the inside
and as much ATP as possible can be made.

7. Vacuole Purposes:
A vacuole is used mostly for storage.

8. Chloroplast:
a. Purpose:
Chloroplasts work to convert light energy of the Sun into sugars that can be used by cells.

b. The reason there is increased surface area is for: (2)

The reason for the increase surface area is to absorb more light and to increase chemical reaction.
