The False Gems by Guy de Maupassant Analysis

Monsieur Lantin enjoyed a comfortable life with his beautiful and virtuous wife in Paris. She was an excellent homemaker who lived frugally. Her only indulgence was a love of jewelry, which Monsieur believed to be fake. After her sudden death, Monsieur discovered that the jewelry was in fact real, leaving him in financial ruin, as her frugal ways had concealed their true wealth. This short story reveals that things are not always as they seem.

I. SUMMARY

Monsieur Lantin, then chief clerk in the Department of the Interior, enjoyed a snug little
salary of three thousand five hundred francs and he has a beautiful wife seems like to be perfect
that The young girl was a perfect type of the virtuous woman in whose hands every sensible
young man dreams of one day intrusting his happiness. He was unspeakably happy with her. She
governed his household with such clever economy that they seemed to live in luxury. The only
weakness she have is fond of jewelry, so she collect some false gems to satisfy her willing. After
the sudden death of his wife, Monsieur Lantin found that he stayed in the lie made by his dear
wife. This story introduced the truth that things are not always what they appear to be.

II. SHORT STORY ELEMENTS

A. Setting
This story's setting is Paris, France, as indicated by the places—namely, the restaurants
and streets—that are mentioned, and it appears to take place in the later part of the
nineteenth century.

B. Characteristics
- Monsieur Lantin is the protagonist and passionately in love with his young wife.
- Monsieur Lantin’s wife is perfect in every aspect, expect for her love of imitation
jewelry and the theater.

C. Plot
After his wife dies of a lung infection, Lantin is heartbroken. But soon the heartbreak is
replaced by financial hardship: left to manage his income by himself, Lantin struggles for
even his next meal. Here, he commits his first act of impropriety, attempting to sell off his
beloved wife's imitation jewelry.
D. Point of View
The point of view here is third-person limited. This means that the narrator is not a
participant in the events that take place, and they know the thoughts and feelings of only
one character. In this case, that character is Monsieur Lantin. We learn, for example, that
he "was unspeakably happy with [his wife]" and that she was so charming that he
discovered, after six years of marriage, that "he loved his wife even more than during the
first days of their honeymoon." We never hear of the thoughts and feelings of Madame
Lantin, and, therefore, we are in great shock right alongside her widower when we learn
that what seemed to be "imitation jewelry" (indeed, what her husband had always believed
to be imitation jewelry) is.

E. Literary devices
As an active form of literature device, irony involves a discrepancy between what is
anticipated to be true and what is actually true.Irony is used throughout Guy de
Maupassant’s The False Gems.Next,I’ll analysis some of them. Mr.Lantin found fault
with only two of his wife’s tastes:Her love for the theatre, and her taste for imitation
jewelry.

F. Theme
The theme is more likely about love, selfishness and how money changed people. Because
two people love each other so much that, they can not be angry of anything that bothers
themselves. But as the story goes on selfishness joins to the theme too.

G. Conflict
The conflict occurs between M. Lantin and his wife: it is of the character vs. character
variety, then. When they married, she had a "modest beauty" and "angelic shyness," and
she seemed to all as the "very ideal of that pure good woman" that any young man would
want to marry. Lantin is "unutterably happy" with his wife, and they spend six years of joy
together.
She grew to love the theater during this time, and she would often spend money on
jewelry that he believed to be worth very little: he assumed it was costume jewelry
because they could not have afforded the real deal.
