Given: 4 FT in X 2ft by 10 In. Solution: 4 FT 2 in 4 (12 In) + 2 in

This document contains the solutions to two area calculation problems. The first problem calculates the area of a rectangular window that is 4 feet 2 inches by 2 feet 10 inches, finding the area to be 1,700 square inches. The second problem finds the area of the largest circle that can be cut from a 4 inch square, and calculates the area of wasted material outside the circle.

ACTIVITY 1

SHOW YOUR SOLUTION

1. A window glass is 4 ft. 2 in. by 2 ft 10 in. Find its area.

Given: 4 ft in x 2ft by 10 in.

Solution: 4 ft 2 in = 4 (12 in) + 2 in

= 48 in + 2 in

= 50 inches

2 ft 10 in = 2 (12 in) + 10 in

= 24 in + 10 in

= 34 inches

Area: length × width

50 inches × 34 inches = 1,700 inches²

2. Find the area of the largest circle which can be cut from a square of edge 4 in. What is the area of the material
wasted?
FORMULA: Area of Material Wasted = Area of Square - Area of Circle

Area of Square =   =    = 16 sq. inches

Area of Circle =  ,

=4 inches (Diameter)

=2 inches (Radius)

` =4

= 12.56 sq. inches

16 - 12.56 = 3.44 sq. inches wasted.
