MOUNTAINEERING EQUIPMENT | PULLEYS This summary of EN 12278 does NOT contain the full details of the

standard.
EN 12278 It is a simplified summary to provide an overview of the test me-
thods and safety requirements for the product.
The official version of the standard must be consulted if full infor-
mation is required. Details of the standard are provided at the end
of this summary.

TESTING THE DESIGN The following compulsory information is supplied by the manufac-
turer on the product:
The sheaves of the pulley are tested with a pin of + 1 mm greater
than the maximum rope diameter permitted for the pulley. The pin - Name of manufacturer;
must touch the bottom of the groove. - Maximum diameter in mm of the rope/ accessory cord with
which the pulley can be used.
- Maximum strength in kN, which can be loaded through the shea-

Pulley sheave - CE mark with 4-digit identification number.

Additional manufacturer information should be taken either from

the labelling or the user manual.

1. TESTING FUNCTIONING UNDER LOAD

A mountaineering rope or accessory cord (of the maximum per-

mitted diameter) is placed in the pulley and threaded through the
sheave.
Under a force of 2 kN applied by means of a steel U-bar, the rope
is pulled so that the sheave of the test sample rotates continuously
ten times in each direction, or until it ceases to rotate. Deformation
or damage which could affect its function are not acceptable.
