Grade-Vi Science - Worksheet Term-2 Ch-12-Electricity and Circuits

This document provides information about electricity and electric circuits. It defines electricity as the flow of electric charges that can be generated from various sources like power stations, batteries, and more. It describes the basic components of electric circuits like cells, bulbs, switches, and wires. Cells produce small amounts of electricity through internal chemical reactions. Bulbs contain a filament that glows when electricity passes through. Switches are used to open and close circuits to turn devices on and off. Wires need to be covered with insulating materials like plastic to safely conduct electricity and prevent shocks. The key components like cells, bulbs, wires, and switches must be connected in a complete loop to form a closed circuit for electricity to flow.

SCIENCE - WORKSHEET
TERM-2 CH-12-ELECTRICITY AND CIRCUITS
Name: ___________________ Date: ____________________
Class: VI

1. What is electricity?
Ans: Electricity is a form of energy that is produced by the flow of electric charges. Electricity can be
generated from thermal or nuclear power stations, windmill, solar panels, batteries, etc.
Electricity is used to run electrical appliances like fans, lights, water pumps, etc.
Electricity is also used to run electronic appliances like T.V., computer, cell phones, etc.

2. Name some of the sources of electricity.

Ans: The primary sources of electricity are sunlight, coal, wind, tides, natural gas, etc. The secondary
source of electricity are cells, batteries, generator, etc.

3. What is an electric cell?

Ans: An electric cell is a device that produces a small amount of electricity capable to run smaller
appliances like wrist watches, torches, clocks, cameras, radios, etc.

• An electric cell has two terminals: positive (+) and negative (-).
• Positive side of an electric cell has a metal cap. The negative side has a flat metal disc.
• Chemicals stored inside the cell produce electricity through internal reactions.
• Once, chemicals are used up, the cell loses its capability to produce electricity.

4. Explain the structure of an electric bulb.

Ans: An electric bulb is a device that produces light when electricity is passed through its terminals.
• The bulb has two thick contact wires in the center with a thin wire attached between them. This
thin wire is called a filament.

• One of the thick wires is connected to the metal cap at the base of the bulb and the other is
connected to the metal tip at the center of the base where there is electrical contact. These two
form the terminals.
• When electricity is passed through the terminals of the bulb, the filament gets heated up and
produces light.
• A bulb is said to be fused if the filament gets broken. A fused bulb doesn’t glow.
• The two terminals do not directly touch each other to avoid a short circuit.

5. What is an electric circuit?

Ans: An electric circuit is a complete path for electricity (current) to pass between two terminals of an
electric cell. The bulb glows when current flows through its terminals.
• Conventionally, current flows from positive terminal to the negative terminal of the battery.
• To make a bulb glow using a cell, a wire needs to be connected from one terminal of the cell to
one terminal of the bulb. Similarly, the other terminal of the cell must be connected to second
terminal of the bulb.
• The bulb will not glow in case the connections are not made properly
• A fused bulb (with broken filament) is a broken path and hence the bulb doesn’t glow.

6. What is an electric switch?
Ans: Electric Switch is an electrical device that can make or break an electric circuit.
• A switch is said to be in ‘ON’ position when it makes or completes the circuit and allows the
current to pass through. This is called a closed circuit. In this circuit the current will flow
continuously making the bulb glow.
• Similarly, a switch is in ‘OFF’ position when it breaks the circuit and does not allow the current
to pass through. This is called an open circuit. In this circuit, current flow is hindered hence the
bulb will not glow.

7. Explain the structure of torch.

Ans: A torch is a portable electric lamp that uses two or more cells to light a small bulb.
1. A torch contains a simple electric circuit inside a plastic case.
2. A torch has two or more cells and a sliding switch that breaks or makes the circuit.
3. The positive terminal of one cell is always in contact with the negative terminal of the other cell.
4. The positive terminal of the other cell is always in contact with the base of the bulb.
5. When the torch is needed for light, we close the circuit by sliding the switch forward so the
circuit is completed and the bulb lights up
6. When the torch is not needed, we open the circuit by sliding the switch backward so the circuit
is broken and the bulb is turned off.
7. The reflector helps the light to be focused to a particular area.

8. What is an electrical conductor and insulator?
Ans:
Electrical Conductors: Materials that allow electric current to pass through them are called
conductors of electricity. Examples are iron nail, key, coin, safety pin, water, human body, etc. Pure
silver is the best conductor of electricity. Copper and aluminium are also good conductors of
electricity and so they are used in making electrical wires.

Electrical Insulators: Materials that do not allow electric current to pass through them are called
insulators of electricity. Examples are rubber, plastic, paper, jute, cotton, glass, air, cloth, etc.

Conductors are mostly metallic while insulators are non-metallic.

Electrical devices are made up of conductors whereas these devices have a covering of insulators
(like plastic, wood, aluminum) over them to avoid passing of the current to human body during their
handling,

9. Why are electric wires covered with plastics?

Ans: The outer covering of electric wires is made of plastics because plastics are insulators. Plastic
covering does not allow the electric current to pass through it. Plastic insulation makes electrical
appliances safe to touch. Otherwise, we will get an electric shock.

10. If you touch an electric wire carrying current you get a shock, but if on the same wire the birds
sit they do not get any shock/current. Explain why?
Ans: When we hold the wire carrying current then the circuit is closed and the current flows from our
body and enters earth but the birds sitting on the same wire do not get any current as the circuit is not
complete. If the bird touches the earth wire, it will also die due to electric shock.

11. Draw a diagram to show the closed circuit for switch, bulb and dry cell.
Ans: A closed circuit is when all the electrical components are connected properly.
