1. What is air?
Ans: Air a mixture of gases and dust particles. Air is colorless, odorless and transparent. It occupies
space and has weight. It exerts pressure on all directions. Air in motion is called wind.
2. What is the composition of air?
Ans: Air mainly contains gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, noble gases and dust particles
and water vapour.
Nitrogen: Air contains 78% of nitrogen. Nitrogen helps in the growth of plants.
Oxygen: Air consists of 21% of oxygen. Oxygen helps in burning. Plants produce oxygen during
photosynthesis. Animals and plants take in oxygen for respiration.
Carbon dioxide: Remaining 0.03% of air is carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide during
photosynthesis. Animals and plants give out carbon dioxide during respiration.
Water vapour: Air contains water vapour and it depends on the weather of the place. Water vapour
in the air is important for water cycle in nature.
Dust and Smoke: Air contains dust particles. Dark coloured gases by burning of things is called
smoke. Smoke is often harmful.
3. What is atmosphere?
Ans: The thin layer of gases that surrounds the Earth is called atmosphere. The atmosphere
extends some few kilometers. Air becomes thinner as we go high up from the surface of the Earth.
4. What are the uses of air?
Ans: A few uses of air are:
➢ Air helps movement of objects like pin wheel, aeroplanes, gliders, sailing yacht, etc.
➢ Air is important for the flight of birds, insects, bats, etc.
➢ Air helps in the dispersal of seeds and pollens of flowers.
➢ Compressed air is used in tyres and spray cans.
➢ Air is used in playing several musical instruments like flute, trumpet, etc.

➢ Windmill works with the help of wind, that is used for draw water from tube wells, run flour
mills and generate electricity.
5. Explain how air supports life.
Ans: All living organisms need air for their survival.
Plants use carbon dioxide to make their own food by a process called photosynthesis. During this
process oxygen is released which is taken up by the plants and animals for respiration process.
In aquatic life:
Most aquatic animals like fish, tadpole, crab, and shrimp have special organs for respiration called
gills. Gills help to take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
Aquatic plants take in dissolved oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
In underground:
Organisms like earthworm, insects, etc. living under the soil survive by taking the air that is trapped
in the spaces in the soil. They take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
