The document describes an experiment to measure the time period of a simple pendulum using a smartphone app called "phyphox". The student measures the time period for different pendulum lengths and calculates the acceleration due to gravity. Key results include: 1. The time period increases with pendulum length, as predicted by the equation for a simple pendulum. 2. Measurements of the acceleration due to gravity yielded a value of 9.584±0.0178 m/s2. 3. The error in measured time period increases with increasing angular displacement of the pendulum.

Aim
Measurement of the time period of simple pendulum using “phyphox” application in
smartphone
Overview
Harmonic oscillation with one natural frequency (a single degree of freedom) can be
observed with a simple pendulum which consists of a mass suspended by non-
stretchable string tied to a fixed support. The harmonic oscillation occurs in a vertical
plane with the gravitational force acting as the restoring force towards the equilibrium
position. With the approximation of small angular displacement, the time period of a
𝑙
simple pendulum is given by 𝑇 = 2𝜋 , where 𝑙 is the length of the pendulum and 𝑔
𝑔𝑔

is the acceleration due to gravity.

Materials required
1. Smartphone with “phyphox” app installed
2. Non-stretchable string
3. Ruler
Procedure
1. Use a non-stretchable string to tie your phone securely.
2. Mark the length of the string which you want to use in the experiment. This point
will be used as pivot to swing your phone as pendulum.
3. In “phyphox” app, under section “Mechanics”, open “Pendulum”. Under the
“Results” tab, the period and frequency of oscillation can be viewed.
4. Use the “Allow remote access” option in settings to connect with your computer.
(With the phone and computer connected to the same wifi, type in your web
browser in your computer, the IP address given at the bottom of the app when

remote access is enabled. This will allow the experiment to be controlled from
your computer.)
5. Hold the phone vertically from the pivot marked and give a small displacement.
“Play” the experiment (triangle icon) from your computer and note the period
after few initial oscillations.
6. Use the “pendulum” experiment in “phyphox” to measure the acceleration due
to gravity g and length of your pendulum (assuming 𝑔 = 9.8 m/s2).
7. Now open the experiment “acceleration (with 𝑔)” and record the acceleration
data for a few oscillations. Export this data to your pc and calculate the time
period of oscillations. Use this time period to estimate the value of 𝑔.
8. Discuss the behavior of acceleration data as a function of time.
9. Using the “gyroscope” sensor in your phone, the app records the angular
velocity as the phone rotates around its axis and then calculates the angular
displacement from this data. Under the tab “Raw Data”, observe the angular
velocity recorded.
Caution
1. Perform the experiment over a soft surface, so that the phone is not damaged,
even if the string is not tied properly and the phone falls.
2. Avoid hitting the phone with a hard surface and ensure that the phone does not
rotate while oscillating.
Observations:
1. Note the mass used (from the specification of the model of the smartphone
used) in the experiment
2. List out the errors in the experiment
3. Provide a screenshot of the raw data showing recorded angular velocity
4. Provide an image of the setup
5. Fill the following measurement table

Additional questions
1. How does the time period depend on the angular displacement?
For small angle Time period doesn’t depend on angular displacement. But as
the angle increase time period increase with time. sinθ≅θ−θ3/3!
2. How does mass affect the experiment?
Mass doesn’t affect the experiment
