Installation Instructions for updates to the WinTR-55
“NRCS_Storm_Data” File and “RainfallDistributions,”
“DimensionlessUnitHydrographs,” and “Sample Files” Folders
Following are installation instructions to update the “NRCS_Storm_Data” file and
“RainfallDistributions,” “DimensionlessUnitHydrographs,” and “Sample Files” folders
used in the NRCS WinTR-55, Version 1.00.10, Small Watershed Hydrology computer
program.
Updating these files and folders is a two-part process. Part A (steps 1 and 2) requires
installing the WinTR-55 Version 1.00.10 DB Update (or WinTR-55 DB) to update the
“NRCS_Storm_Data” file. Part B (steps 3 and 4) involves copying the WinTR-55.zip file
onto your computer at the appropriate specified location and unzipping the files to update
the “RainfallDistributions,” “DimensionlessUnitHydrographs,” and “Sample Files”
folders.
Part A: Updating the NRCS_Storm_Data file
Part A requires administrative privileges for NRCS users.
Step 1. Install WinTR-55 Version 1.00.10 on your computer.
NRCS users: Contact your IT support for installation of WinTR-55 Version 1.00.10.
Non-NRCS users: Obtain the WinTR-55 Version 1.00.10 install package from the
West NTSC WinTR-55 Watershed Hydrology support Web site or through the Science
and Technology Conservation Tools Software Web page.
Step 2. Install the WinTR-55 Version 1.00.10 DB Update.
NRCS users: Contact your IT support for installation of WinTR-55 Version 1.00.10 DB
update.
Non-NRCS users: Obtain the WinTR-55 Version 1.00.10 DB update install package
from the West NTSC WinTR-55 Watershed Hydrology support Web site.
Part B: Updating the “RainfallDistributions,”
“DimensionlessUnitHydrographs,” and “Sample Files” folders.
Part B does not require administrative privileges for NRCS users.
Step 3. Set your computer to show hidden files, directories, and drives.
Click Start button
Click Control Panel
Control Panel Window: Select "View by: Category" and click "Appearance
and Personalization."
Appearance and Personalization Window: Click "Folder Options"
Folder Options Window: Click "View" tab
Folder Options Window View tab: Under "Hidden files and folder" check the radio
button for "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
Click "Apply" and "OK" to save the settings and close the Control Panel window.
Step 4: Save the new WinTR-55.zip file and unzip the folder.
• For Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit:
o Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming
folder and check to see if a WinTR-55 folder is listed.
o If there is a WinTR-55 folder listed, delete it.
o Save the new WinTR-55.zip file to c:\User\username\AppData\Roaming folder
o Run Win Zip to unzip and create the new updated WinTR-55 folder.
The WinTR-55 folder located at c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming takes priority over a
folder of the same name located at C:\Program Files (x86)\USDA\WinTR-55\Application
Data. For NRCS users, changing the folder at the C:\Program Files… location requires
administrative privileges, while changing the folder at the C:\Users\username\... location does
not require administrative privileges.
If users do not copy this folder to the designated location, they will not have access to the
updated data.
• Other Windows platforms: Users experiencing problems with other Windows
platforms may contact Quan D. Quan at (301) 504-3952 for assistance.
