Dynamic Learning Program (General Mathematics) : Arellano University

This document is a lesson plan from Arellano University's Senior High School Department for the school year 2020-2021. It covers concepts related to functions and their graphs, including representing functions using ordered pairs, graphs, real-life situations, and piecewise functions. Examples are provided for each concept. Exercises at the end ask students to determine if relations represent functions and to represent a cost scenario using a piecewise function.

CONCEPT NOTES 1
I. TOPIC: FUNCTIONS AND THEIR GRAPHS: Representation of Function
II. LEARNING GOAL: The students should be able to:
a. represents real-life situations using functions, including piece-wise functions.
III. CONCEPTS
FUNCTION
 A function f is a relation in which each element of the domain corresponds exactly to
one element of the range.
 The members of the domain can be called inputs and the members of the range can be
called outputs.
 We usually represent a function by the equation y= f(x) where y is the dependent
variable and x is the dependent variable.
REPRESENTATION OF FUNCTIONS
1. By a set of ordered pairs
f = {(1,2),(2,2),(3,5),(4,5)}
g = {(1,3),(1,4),(2,5),(2,6),(3,7),(3,8)}
1
h = {(a, x 2),(√ y, ),(13,2d),(q,st)}
y
2. By a graph in a Cartesian plane
The Vertical Line Test
A graph represent a function if and only if each vertical line intersects the graph at
exactly one point.

3. By representations on real-life situations

EXAMPLE 1.
Given a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if one meal costs 40
Php.

Solution:
Given a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if one meal costs 40
Php.
Therefore, the functions that represents this problem is given by:
Let x be the cost of buying and let C be the name of our function
C(x) = 40x
4. Piecewise Functions
A piecewise function is a function defined by two or more formulas on different parts of
its domain.
Example.
A jeepney ride costs P 9.00 for the first 5 kilometers and each additional integer
kilometer adds P 1.50 to the fare. Use a piecewise function to represent the jeepney
fare in terms of the distance d in kilometers km.

Solution:
Let x represents the jeepney fare (in terms of km) and let F be the name of our function.
Therefore, our piecewise function is,
9, if 0 ¿ x ≤ 5
F(x)
9 + 1.5(x), if x¿ 5

IV. EXERCISES
I. Directions: Determine if the following represents a function.
1. n ={(-4,2),(0,9),(-4,8),(4,5),(-1,10)}
2. s = {(mathematics, science),(mathematics, english),(mathematics, economics)}
3. f(x) = x 4
4. 5.

II. A videoke machine can be rented for P 1000 for 3 days, but the fourth day onwards, an
additional cost of P 400 a day is a added. Represent the cost of renting a videoke machine as a
piecewise function of the number of days it is rented.
