A. Readings/Discussions
Most of the foodstuffs that we consume every day such as sugar, fats, starch, vinegar,
etc are basically organic compounds. Products that contain organic compounds
include shampoo, gasoline, perfume, lotion drugs, food and food additives, plastics,
paper, insect repellant, synthetic fabrics (nylon, polyester, rayon), paint, mothballs
(naphthalene), enzymes, nail polish remover, wood, coal, natural gas, solvents,
fertilizers, vitamins, dyes, soap, candles, asphalt, and etc.
Here are are some examples of organic compounds with their corresponding uses:
Ethyl alcohol It is used for making wine and another alcoholic drinking
stuff, tincture, barnish and polish, in the form of solvents, in
methyleted spirit, in artificial colours in perfumes and scent of
fruits, in transparent soaps, in spirit lamps and stoves, in the
form of fuel of motor vehicle in cleaning the wound, in the form
of insecticide etc.
Aside from those found in organisms, organic compounds are found in plastics,
medicines, and various substances. However, some carbon-containing compounds,
such as carbon dioxide and carbonates, are not considered organic.

GUIDE
Advise the students to read the Reading and Discussion portion before they attempt
to answer the practice exercises. Let the learners go through the parts sequentially to
help them understand the topic easily. The Key Answers are for you to refer during the
checking. Don’t include it in the printing.
Read thoroughly and understand the Self-Learning Home Task from the first part to
the last part. By doing so, will help you understand better the topic. If you still have
enough time, do it twice for more understanding. You can use a dictionary if you find it
hard to comprehend the science terms. Use a separate sheet for your answers.
Assist your child and make sure that he/she reads the Self-Learning Home Task
from the beginning up to end, to ensure proper understanding of the concepts. Don’t
feed the answer to your child. Let her/him do it of his own.
( Note: Pls don’t include the Answer Key in printing
