Topic 1 - Methods of Data Collection SAQ Situation Method To Be Used Justification

This document discusses methods of data collection and planning surveys. It provides examples of situations where different data collection methods would be appropriate, such as using questionnaires when collecting opinions from a large population due to lower cost and time efficiency. The document also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of questionnaires, the importance of validating questionnaires to ensure quality and reliability of research, and identifying activities that must be accomplished before preparing a budget for a survey.

Topic 2 – Planning and Conducting Surveys

SAQ
1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a questionnaire in doing a
survey?
The advantages of using a questionnaire as an instrument to gather data is that it
will not be costly and can obtain large data over many people in just a short period of
time, also there will be no need to additional support in obtaining the data since the
researchers themselves can take care of the data gathering. After it, the results can be
easily put into software like Excel and use appropriate statistical tools for its intended
purpose. The results can be compared to other past research that tackles the same
setting or subject.
However, the disadvantages rely mostly on the respondents themselves. Their
motivation to answer may vary, some can be more honest than others, some can be
more forgetful than others, and others may interpret the question differently. So, the
effort put in the answers differs from every respondent. Moreover, it cannot exactly
explain as to why a phenomenon happens but rather the researchers can only infer
conclusions from the data analysis which most answers came from a stimulus of the
respondents.
Lastly, other factors such as proper sampling population and how the questions
are presented can prove either advantageous or disadvantageous depending on how
the questionnaire is made.

2. Why is validation of questionnaire important?

If the questionnaire lacks validity, not only it sacrifices the quality of research, but
also the degree to which gathered data to be used for interpretation cannot be fully
utilized for its intended purpose. That is why the validation of a questionnaire is
absolutely important in a sense that it will make the gathered data more accurate,
hence, it does not sacrifice the quality of the research.
Validating a questionnaire can help the research become more reliable since
they are very much related to each other in making good research. If the validity of a
questionnaire is accurate, and if the questionnaire is used repeatedly and shows a
consistency in its measurements, it means that the questionnaire is reliable as well.

3. In doing a survey, which should be done first, budget preparation or identification of

activities that must be accomplished? Explain.
The activities to be accomplished must be identified first such as selecting the
respondents as well as the area on where the respondents can be found or where to
conduct the survey so that the researchers can gauge how much budget should be
prepared for the overall process of surveying and assign the proper spending of budget
in each of its phase or category like preparing the survey copies for how many amounts,
money for transportation, and for the supplies and materials, and possible extra work
efforts.
