Comparison of promotional strategies

The STAR WARS promotional team made huge inroads to promote the movie , spent around
20 million. They made deals with PepsiCo, Hasbro, Lego . Lukas film also helped the star
wars fan club to organize special event, star wars celebration. Team also made teaser trailer
& bootlegged version was released to create a hype before the release of movie. Movie was
premiered at showest convention in Las Vegas and was aired on channels entertainment
tonight and access Hollywood . Many other tie ups were also established to create an
bounded associations with the viewers such as lucas arts video games for play station and
computers ,a four part comic adaption by dark horse comics , Terry brooks also wrote the
official novel on the movie under the guidance of lucas films .

The Blair Witch Project was made for $22,000 and parlayed into $248 million at the box
office, by generating massive pre-opening "buzz" on the internet long before the public even
knew they were reading about a movie. The chat sites started picking up rumors of three
college kids who were lost in the woods while on a film school project investigating stories
about a witch. The kids were never heard from again but their camera was found. The film
inside was restored, revealing horrifying sounds in the night woods.It was, of course all a
hoax, but for a time many on the chat sites were believers. But what is truly remarkable was
how the hoax took on a life of its own, even before anyone heard that the supposed film
found in the woods was coming to theatres. By the time the film was released, it had built up
fever-level anticipation.

Though comparison between the these movies won’t be a fair thing to do as both
followed the strategies which are extreme to each other, where star wars followed
aggressive strategies to promote their movie they used all the means through which
they can make people aware about the movie from internet campaign to premiere ,
from kids toys to comics, novels, collaboration to tie ups etc .

On the other hand The Blair Witch Project showed how effective promotional strategies
not only reduce the promotional budget but also prove vital for the success of the
movie . This strategy followed by them was innovative as it brought real kind of
instance to people life though it was a hoax , they realised that they have to make the
general public involved in promotion , they did it successfully and results were
apparent as movie gathered around 248 million by merely spending 22000 $ .

Design merchandise of your film with the film's logo like T-shirts & hats and make it
available to various outlets .

Develop a good trailer of your movie that help the viewers to view what the movie is
all about moreover the trailer should be designed in such a way that arises curiosity
among them .
While your film is at its infancy stage, start a blog. Make regular entries in this blog
and make a regular feature for many.

Now consider making a logo of your film. Remember, this logo would be used be in
several places so it must be very attractive and should have the spirit that your film
has .

promote their movies, songs and it has done wonders for them.

television has also emerged as a very strong medium. However, it is very expensive
and perhaps only the well established studios can afford them. Internet has introduced
several new alternates in the marketing field provided one knows the trick to use them
to the fullest.

Aamir khan can go for nationwide events in tier 2 cities where the main focus
would be to enlighten the audience on various aspects of the movie. Not only this
type of promotion would create interest among the audience as they get an
opportunity to see and interact with the star but also create much needed publicity
for the movie through the media coverage .

Second approach would be to distribute the merchandise relating to the movies


such as caps,t-shirts for free to all the universities students throughout country for
this teams can be made for every region . This would help to catch the attention
of the youth which is main revenue earning source for movie industry moreover
this would also help the word of mouth promotion through students .
