Pp: Relative velocity and Acceleration of Coincident Points on Separate Links Coriolis Acceleration [VTU, Dec.2014/Jan.2015, Dec.2015/Jan.2016] “Whenever a point in one body moves along a path on a second body, and if the path iy rotating, then the acceleration of the point in the first body relative to a coincident point in the second body will have a Coriolis component". (@ (b) () Fig. 3.9 (d) (e) Scanned with CamScanner Velocity & Acceleration Analysis of Mechanisms (Graphical Methods) 69 In Fig. 3.9 (a). Let B be a point on link 3 (i.e., slider) and be a fixed point on link 2. Let Band ‘Abe coincident atthe instant, Let link 2 have a constant angular velocity © in its motion from OP 10 OP, inasmall interval of time ‘dt’. During this small interval of time the slider 3 moves outwards from position B to B,, Assume this motion also with constant velocity V,,. Consider the motion of the slider from B to B, in the following three stages. {i) BtoA, due to the rotation of link 2 {iy A, t0 B, due to the outward velocity V,,, Gi) B, to B, dve to acceleration perpendicular to the ink 2. ‘The third component is the Coriolis component of acceleration. Now consider the third component ie., B, B, we have, Are B,B, = Are QB, - Arc QB, = Are QB, ~ Arc AA, = 0Q.d0 - OA.d0 = d@ [0Q- OA] = AQ d= A, B, d® But A,B, = V,, dt and d0 = w,.dt Are. B, B, = Vyy dt. Oy dt = Vay. @, dt —() : : ao mrad Mm Now Vz. @,is an acceleration, since its units are, “7-22 = Geof ie sec sec sec Further for a small displacement z ds = saue? 1 i are B,B, = 54d" Therefore equating (1) and (2), we get Le oe = Vy dt? . @=2 V,,.@, Which is called the Coriolis component of acceleration for the point B. The direction of this acceleration is shown in Fig. 3.9 (b), 3.9 (©), 3.9 (d) and 3.9 (e). The direction of Coriolis acceleration is the direction of V,,, after the latter has been rotated through 90" in the direction of the angular velocity of the path, In Fig 3.9 (b) the slider moves upward and the link rotates in clockwise direction. In Fig. 3.9 (c) the slider moves upward and the link rotates in counter clockwise direction. In Fig. 3.9 (d) the slider moves downward and the link rotates in clockwise direction. In Fig. 3.9 (e) the slider moves downward and the link rotates in counter clockwise direction. Scanned with CamScanner
