HW6 201

This homework assignment contains 4 problems related to machine design and components involving clutches, brakes, and heat transfer calculations. Problem 1 asks students to identify applications for different clutch and brake types and perform calculations related to a single-shoe drum brake. Problem 2 involves calculations for a two-shoe drum brake system. Problem 3 requires calculating energy, dimensions, time, and heat transfer properties for a disk clutch. Problem #1

1. Identify at least 2 practical applications for each type of the following clutches and brakes
a. Centrifugal clutch
b. Internal expanding brake
c. External short shoe brake
d. Band brake
e. Axial clutch
f. Caliper disk brake
g. Cone clutch

2. For the shown single short-shoe drum brake, find:

a) Brake torque capacity (T)
b) Acting Force (F)
c) Reaction forces on the hinge
d) The value of (e) for self-locking brake.

Cont.

Problem #2
(a) The figure shows a brake with two identical shoes with the rim rotating in clock-wise direction.
What is the braking capacity for the given brake specification.

Brake specification
Rim inside diameter = 300 mm
Shoe face width = 40 mm
Dimension R in figure = 125 mm
Coefficient of friction for lining material = 0.28
Allowable pressure for lining material = 735 kPa
Direction of rotation of the rim is Clockwise

(b) If the following are conditions for an effective cost design:

 At least 85% of the lining material allowable pressure should be utilized.
 The maximum operating applied load cannot exceed 2 kN.
 The material lining width should be below 60 mm.
 Dimension c = 0.2165 m (Refer to Fig. 16-7 of textbook)
Find the minimum allowable pressure of the lining material?

(c) Determine the minimum value of dimension “R” to avoid self-locking condition.

Problem #3
An old disk clutch system with two friction pairs made of woven cotton (Table 16-3) is designed to bring
two rotating shafts to an equal speed, using a constant actuating force of 60 N. The interias and the speeds
of the two shafts are: I1 = 20 kg.m2, I2 = 30 kg.m2, n1 = 400 rpm, n2 = 100 rpm, respectively. The clutching
operation is repeated several times every hour on a continuous basis. The clutch disk face width is (ro -ri) =
80 mm.
a) Calculate the total energy (in Joules) dissipated during a single clutching operation.
b) Find the inner and outer disk diameters d and D, respectively.
c) Calculate the clutching time (in seconds) required by a single clutching operation.
d) Determine the maximum number of clutching operations per hour that can be conducted without
overheating the clutch material. Assume an ambient temperature of 25 oC, clutch material heat
capacity of 0.5 kJ/(kg.oC), clutch material mass of 0.4 kg, combined heat transfer coefficient of hCR
= 55 W/(m2.oC), and a surface area of 0.05 m2.
e) If the disk clutch is replaced with a cone clutch that has a cone angle of 12 degrees with the same
material and diameters, what would be the effect on the clutching time estimated in part (c) and the
maximum number of clutching operations per hour, estimated in part (d). Support your answers by
calculations and write the answers in the table below.

Write the final answers in this table after completing all necessary calculation steps.

Problem #4
It is required to design a disk type brake that is used to stop a rotating axle from a speed of 200
rpm and a torque of 3000 Ib.in. The braking time is assumed to take 120 s from start to rest.
1. The rotating parts have the following characteristics:
 The rotary inertia of the machine as seen from the brake shaft (Ieq) is 340 Ibf.in.s2.
 Specific heat capacity (Cp) is 0.15 Btu/(Ibm. F).
 The lateral area of the brake surface is 65 in2.
 The mass (W) is equal to 2.4 Ibm.
Estimate Tmax and the corresponding Tmin with a ventilation factor, fv assumed to be 5.
(Consider the ambient temperature as 70 F)
2. Choose a friction material for the lining material from table 16-3 for which a safety factor
of 2 is preferred to avoid overheating.
3. With the maximum friction coefficient of the chosen material and after an initial wear has
taken place:
3a- Indicate which of the assumptions; uniform wear or uniform pressure you want to use
and why?
3b- If the disk inner and outer diameters are respectively 2.5 in, and 3.5 in., estimate the
normal pressure, pa and the actuation force, F.
3c- Comment on the pressure quantity: Is it acceptable? if not what are the available
alternatives?
Make reasonable assumptions if needed.
