Sensor Interface
Problem Statement
• Proliferation of sensors in mobile devices has
increased the demand for Apps processor GPIO’s
–High tier mobile devices feature 10+ sensors
–A critical point has been reached: 20 or more signals are required
• Industry support of digital interfaces is fragmented
–Typically I2C or SPI (for clearing large FIFO’s)
–Complicating this issue, SPI is not standardized
• In addition to the main interface, other signals are
required
–Most sensors featuring I2C require one or more interrupts
–Most sensors featuring SPI require interrupt and chip select
–Some sensors require a dedicated “sleep” signal
• These steadily increasing requirements brought an
opportunity to define a solution for a scalable, cost
effective interface between host and sensors

Introduction:
MIPI Sensor WG
• Sensor Working Group (WG) formed by MIPI BoD on October 7, 2013
– Started with a BoF (Birds of Feather) and MIG survey in 2012 – Open to all
• MIPI Sensor WG Officers
– Chair – Ken Foust, Intel
– Vice-Chair – Satwant Singh, Lattice
• Sensor WG Goal: Develop an I2C compatible interface with sensor-focused
differentiating features for 2015
– Reduce power, pin-count and cost
– Adoptable, flexible and convenient
• Multiple MIPI and non-MIPI proposals considered and technically graded
by the Sensor Investigation Group (IG) in 2013
• Sensor WG focusing on development based on merging technology
contributions from leading SoC, Sensor Hub and Sensor Vendors
– Most member companies are common to MIG and MIPI
– A truly communal development process
• Currently working toward v0.6 milestone at Seattle, March 9-13
– Key technical components are locked down!

Sensor WG Charter
• Define a standardized Sensor Interface
– Consistent within the scope of the MIPI Alliance
• Enable device interface compatibility between MIPI member companies
– Strive to re-use an existing industry interface (in whole or in part)
• The MIPI Sensor Interface builds upon I2C FM/FM+
– Flexible and able to evolve
• Provide value to adopters and focus on Sensor Vendors
• Anticipate future architectures for mobile and complimentary industry needs
• Unify a fragmented interface industry, in and out of mobile
– Interface features focus on:
• Low cost implementation on the sensor side (< 2000 gates)
• Reduced signal count interface
• In-band interrupts
• In-band command codes
• Reduced interface power consumption – support push/pull IO
• Reconfigurable systems – support dynamic addressing
• Increased bandwidth > 10Mbps
– Implemented via supported HDR (High Data Rate) Modes
» HDR DDR – Double Data Rate Bus
» HDR TSP - Transcoded ternary symbols transmitted on rising and falling SCL/SDA

Sensor WG Charter Cont’d

• Develop needed support documentation

– Whitepaper and FAQ
• Maintain and update the specification as needed
– In addition to revising the initial release of the Sensor Interface
Specification to address bugs, the WG will adequately ensure the
Specification maintains a relevant feature set and scope
• The sensor industry is still quite volatile with mobile OEM’s introducing new
sensors with each release.
• It is expected that new sensors will regularly land within the Sensor Interface
Specification’s scope for the foreseeable future.
