L4 Bim

This document provides an overview of Building Information Modeling (BIM) including definitions, applications, benefits, and software packages. It defines BIM as both a process and product, describing the product as a 3D object-based model containing semantic information about a building. The document outlines several applications of BIM such as design authoring, clash detection, generating drawings, and construction scheduling. Benefits mentioned include increased productivity and cost savings. It also provides data on BIM adoption rates and ROI. Finally, it briefly introduces some common BIM software packages such as Autodesk Revit and Bentley OpenBuildings Designer.

Definition of BIM

3
What does BIM represent?

• Product: Building information model

- A model containing information of a building
- A structured dataset describing a building

• Process: Building information modeling

- The process of creating a building information model
- The process of generating and managing building information during
its life cycle

4
Product: Building information model
• Search for “Building information model” in Google Images

• BIM is just 3D models? – No!

5
Product: Building information model
• From CAD to BIM: not only increased dimensions, but also
increased information
• BIM not only contains geometry information, but also semantic
information, e.g. cost, schedule, material, properties…

6
Product: Building information model
• Semantic information is built upon object-based modelling
• Object-based modelling: Line is not just a line
CAD: only geometry BIM: Object-based
information Semantic information

7
Product: Building information model
• CAD: model based on geometries

• BIM: model based on objects

8
Product: Building information model
• One model, multiple views
• Keep consistency among different views

9
Product: Building information model

• BIM is:
• Three-dimensional (3D) model
• Object-based model
• Information-rich model
• Representing the physical and functional features of a
building

• What is BIM (ArchiCAD)

10
Product: Building information model

• National Building Information Modeling Standard (NBIMS):

- “A Building Information Model (BIM) is a digital representation of
physical and functional characteristics of a facility. As such it serves as
a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming
a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle from inception
onward.”

- “A basic premise of BIM is collaboration by different stakeholders at

different phases of the life cycle of a facility to insert, extract, update
or modify information in the BIM process to support and reflect the
roles of that stakeholder.”

11
What is NOT BIM?
• E.g. 2D drawings
• E.g. 3D models but not object-based
• E.g. object-based 3D models not transferrable or usable across other
disciplines
• ...

Applications of BIM

15
Applications of BIM

• Design authoring: visualize the project and help understand

the design (especially for complex structures)

(Tianjin Cruise Terminal, China)

16
Applications of BIM

• Clash detection: detection of (1) hard clash and (2) soft

clash, especially among architectural, structural, and MEP
models.

17
Applications of BIM

• Generating drawings: building the model is like building the

actual building; 2D drawings become the by-product

18
Applications of BIM

• Site analysis / selection: orientation studies, topography,

existent/future underground utilities, environmental impacts, etc.
• Security validation: egress/circulation paths; building code
compliance
• Structural analysis: predict structural behaviours
• ACMV (air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation) analysis:
design solutions integrating ACMV analysis are needed
• Sustainability evaluation: energy and lighting analysis

=> Compare design alternatives

19
Applications of BIM
• Construction Scheduling (4D BIM)
• 4D BIM = 3D + Time/Schedule
• Effectively plan construction sequences and space requirements on
a construction site.
• Example 1: The Shard - the UK's first 1000ft skyscraper

• Example 2: MEP Installation Simulation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE_zYiltsAw

20
Applications of BIM
• 5D BIM (3D + Time + Cost)
• Cost estimation /quantity take-off: estimate the cost of a project in
an early phase
• Cost monitoring and control

21
Benefits of BIM

22
Why BIM? – Productivity
• Low productivity of the construction industry

23
Why BIM? – Productivity
• In FY2015, BCA embarked on the 2nd Construction Productivity
Roadmap to further drive productivity in the industry.

24
BIM Cost Benefit Analysis
• Cost up
• Hardware/software
• Training staff
• Schematic design phase (time to build the model)

• Cost down
• Decrease in errors, conflicts and omissions
• Reduced construction and change order cost
• Less RFIs (requests for information) initiated
• Better communicated design

25
BIM Cost Benefit Analysis

• Return on investment (ROI) analysis can evaluate a

proposed investment. It compares the gains anticipated
from an investment against the cost of the investment.

gain from investment – cost of investment

ROI =
cost of investment

41
Software in this Course

Autodesk Revit 2020

• Installed in SDE2 E-Studio 1&2 (ES1&ES2) computers
• However, due to online teaching & learning, you are strongly
suggested to install on your laptops.

42
Where to Get?
• Register for an Autodesk education account

software/overview?sorting=featured&page=1

43
Where to Get?
• Register for an Autodesk education account
• You will be asked to upload verification document for student status
• Recommend to use 'Student Status Letter' from NUS Education
Records System (EduRec)

44
Getting Autodesk Revit 2020
• Autodesk education software download:
software/overview?sorting=featured&page=1
• Log in
• Download Revit 2020

45
Installation of Revit 2020
• In the “Content Libraries 2020” section, click “Click to
open and configure”, uncheck “US Imperial” and check
“US Metric”.

46
Is Revit Installed Correctly?
• Two key items in Revit: project templates and family libraries
• Template: a file with .rte suffix
• Library: a folder to keep all the family library objects
• Both templates and libraries are stored in a hidden folder
“C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2020”, where you could find
“Templates” folder and “Libraries” folder

Templates Family libraries

47
Installation Issues

• Revit only supports Windows OS

• For Mac users, you can install a Windows OS using Bootcamp
(as dual boot), and then install Revit
• Installation of Revit will need good Internet connection (for
downloading template and family libraries).
