American University of Beirut: Mechanics of Materials (Mech320) QUIZ 2 - (Spring 2011) - 2H

This document contains a 5-problem quiz on mechanics of materials. The problems cover topics like determining the maximum torque a shaft can transmit based on inner/outer diameters and allowable shear stress; calculating the angle of twist in a shaft given applied torques and material properties; finding the maximum torque applied to a steel/aluminum connected system before exceeding allowable stresses; bending stresses and moments in a composite T-beam; and shear and bending failure analysis of a double-web wood girder. The document provides the questions and spaces for students to show their work and write out answers.

MECHANICS OF MATERIALS (MECH320)

QUIZ 2-(Spring 2011)-2H
STUDENT NAME: ID:

Problem 1. (20 pts) The preliminary design of a large shaft connecting a motor to a generator calls for the
use of a hollow shaft with inner and outer diameters of 4 in. and 6 in., respectively. Knowing that the
allowable shearing stress is 12 ksi, determine the maximum torque ( Unit: kip. in) that can be transmitted:

a) by the shaft as designed

b) by a solid shaft of the same weight
c) by a hollow shaft of the same weight and 8-in outer diameter.

Note: You do not have to modify units for this problem

Answer:

Problem 2. ( 20 pts) The horizontal shaft AD is attached to a fixed base at D and is subjected to
the torques shown. A 44-mm diameter hole has been drilled into portion CD of the shaft.
Knowing that the entire shaft is made of steel for which G=77 GPa, determine the angle of twist
at A.

Problem 3.(20 pts). A steel shaft and an aluminum tube are connected to a fixed support and to a rigid
disc as shown at the cross section. Knowing that the initial stresses are zero, determine the maximum
torque T0 that can be applied to the disc if the allowable stresses are 120 MPa in the steel shaft and 70
MPa in the aluminum tube. Use G=77 GPa for steel and G=27 GPa for aluminum

Problem 4. (20 pts). Two steel plates have been welded together to form a beam in the shape of a T that
has been strengthened by securely bolting to it the two oak timbers shown. The modulus of elasticity is
12.5 GPa for the wood and 200 Gpa for the steel. Knowing that a bending moment M =50 kN . m is
applied to the composite beam, determine (a) the maximum stress in the wood (b) The stress in the steel
along the top edge.

Problem 5: (20 pts). The double-web girder is constructed from two plywood sheets that are secured to
wood members at its top and bottom. The allowable bending stress for the wood is σ all=8 ksi and the
allowable shear stress is τ all=3 ksi. If the fasteners are spaced s=6∈. and each fastener can support 600
lb in single shear:

a) Plot the FBD and shear and moment diagrams.

b) Assume bolt failure, then determine the maximum load that can be applied to the beam (Use
shear flow equation)
c) Assume that failure is due to shear stress, than determine the maximum load that can be applied
to the beam.
d) Assume that failure is due to bending stress, then determine the maximum load that can be
applied to the beam.
e) Compare the answers in parts B, C and D. Conclusion
