Assignment 7 Solution

The document contains three heat transfer problems involving heat transfer from gases in a chimney, heat transfer between parallel plates with glycerin flowing between them, and heat transfer from river water to air flowing through a submerged duct. The problems provide information about temperatures, dimensions, material properties, and flow rates and ask the reader to evaluate given temperatures or calculate heat transfer rates and power requirements.

Heat Transfer Assignment Problems Set #7 - Sec. 1 – July 12th, 2021

Problem #1: An aluminum plant releases gasses in the atmosphere through a 10-m-tall chimney with outer diameter of
1 m at a rate of 1.2 kg/s. A measurement is recording a temperature difference of 30 °C between the inlet and
outlet of the chimney. On the day when the temperature difference was recorded, the engineer measured the
chimney’s surface temperature to be approximately 130 ºC, temperature of the air surrounding the chimney to be
27 °C, wind was blowing at 10 m/s across the chimney, sun was radiating on the chimney surface at a rate of
1400 W/m2. The engineer determined the specific heat of the gases to be 1600 J/kgK, whereas emissivity and
absorptivity of the outer surface at a surrounding temperature of 27 °C were calculated to be 0.9. Is the surface
temperature measured by the engineer correct? Provide an explanation for your choice of temperature to evaluate
the properties.

Problem #2: You are performing an experiment to determine the outer temperature of glycerin that enters two
parallel plates at a mass flow rate of 0.7 kg/s and initial temperature of 25 ºC. The plates width and length are 1-
m and 10-m, respectively, and the spacing between the plates is measured at 12.5 mm. You design the
experimental setup such that the plates are maintained at a constant surface temperature of 40 ºC. What is the
temperature of the glycerin that you record when the experiment is operating steadily? What is the corresponding
rate of heat transfer that you calculate? Evaluate the properties of glycerin at 30 °C. Is this a good assumption?

Problem #3: Windsor’s district energy plant uses water from the Detroit River for cooling during summer days.
The system is designed such that a duct with diameter of 20 cm and length of 15 m carrying air is emersed in the
river water that is measured to remain at an average temperature of 15 ºC. Air is measured to enter the portion of
duct that is submerged at 25 °C and travels through the duct with a velocity of 3 m/s. Neglecting the velocity of
the river, the air was measured to exit the duct at approximately 18.5 ºC. Is this temperature correct? You observe
that the flow has resistance hence you install a fan with a 55% efficiency to push the air. What is the power of the
fan?
