Assignment 8 Solution

The document contains 3 heat transfer assignment problems regarding heat transfer in circular tubes. Problem 3 provides conditions for air flowing through a square duct, including the inlet air temperature and flow rate, duct dimensions and surface temperature, and asks the student to determine the exit air temperature and rate of heat loss from the duct. Step-by-step working is shown to solve for the exit temperature using the properties and assumptions provided.

Heat Transfer Assignment Problems Set #8 - Sec. 1 – July 21st, 2021

Problem #1: In the fully developed region of flow in a circular tube, will the velocity profile change in the flow direction?
How about the temperature profile? Explain in your own words and draw a schematic of the profiles?

Problem #2: Consider turbulent forced convection in a circular tube. Will the heat flux be higher near the inlet of the tube
or near the exit? Why?

1
Problem #3: Consider an experiment in which air at 80 °C enters a duct at a rate of 0.150kg/s. The air travels through the
8 m long square duct with side of 0.2 m at an average velocity of 3.75 m/s. Due to a phase-change the surface of the duct
remains nearly isothermal at 60 °C. Determine the exit temperature of the air and the rate of heat loss from the duct.
