Week 4 Assignment 4 Solution Full Marks 16: NC 2 Go 2 N NC Go 2

This document contains solutions to questions from a week 4 assignment on structural steel connections. Question 1 asks about calculating the net area of an angle connected through a single leg to a gusset plate with M20 bolts. The solution finds the net area to be 1200 mm^2. Question 2 asks about vertical and horizontal shear stresses in a fillet weld. The solutions finds the vertical shear stress to be 59.5 MPa and the horizontal shear stress to be 267.9 MPa. Question 8 asks about tension and shear forces in bolts of a joint loaded at an angle, finding the tension to be 33.33 kN and the shear to be 25 kN.

Week 4 Assignment 4 Solution Full Marks 16

Q.1 Calculate the net area of an angle ISA 90×90×8 which is connected to
the gusset plate through single leg. Bolts used are M20 grade 4.6. 2
(a) 1200 mm2

Solution: Diameter of bolt hole = 20 + 2 = 22 mm

Net Area of connected leg, Anc = (90-8/2-22) × 8 = 512 mm2
Gross area of outstanding leg, Ago = (90-8/2) × 8 = 688 mm2
Net area, An = Anc + Ago = 512 + 688 = 1200 mm2

Q.2 Calculate the vertical shear stress and horizontal shear stress due to
bending if the size of the fillet weld is 6 mm. (All dimensions are in
mm) 4

(c) 59.5 MPa and 267.9 MPa

Solution:
Size of the fillet weld = 6 mm
Effective throat thickness = 0.70×6 = 4.2 mm
Vertical shear stress, q = (100×103)/(2×200×4.2) = 59.52 MPa
Horizontal shear stress due to bending, fb = (6×100×103×150)/(2×4.2×2002) =
267.86 MPa.

Q.4 A steel plate is 30 cm wide and 10 mm thick. If the diameter of the

bolt hole is 20 mm, the net section area of the plate is 2
(b) 28 cm2
Solution: (30-2)×1 = 28 cm2
Q.5 Which of the following member will be affected by shear lag? 1

(c)

Solution: The outstand leg is not directly connected. Non-uniform

stress distribution will take place.

Q.6 Calculate the minimum net area for the plate shown below connected
to 10 mm thick gusset plate with 18 mm bolts. 2

(b) 800 mm2

An (path 11) = (160 - 3×20) × 8 = 800 mm2

An (path 1221) = [(160 - 4×20) + (2×402)/(4×25)] ×8 = 896 mm2
An (path 12321) = [(160 - 5×20) + (4×402)/(4×25)] ×8 = 992 mm2

Q.7 The line of rotation (i.e. the neutral axis) for the eccentric connection
(load lying perpendicular to the plane of bolted joint) is approximately
assumed to lie at 1
th
(c) a height of 1/7 the depth of bracket measured from the
bottom edge of bracket.
Answer: Lecture no-16, slide no 3
Q.8 The tension and shear force (both in kN) in each bolt of the joint, as
shown below, respectively are 4

(d) 33.33 kN and 25 kN

Answer: Px = Pu cosθ = 4/5 Pu

Py = Pu sinθ = 3/5 Pu
Tension in each bolt = 4Pu/(5×6) = (4×250)/(5×6) = 33.33 kN
Shear in each bolt = 3Pu/(5×6) = (3×250)/(5×6) = 25 kN
