A 160 m long sag parabolic curve connects a -8% grade to

a +2% grade. The grades intersect at Station 1 + 240 with
elevation of 14.87 m. Find the elevation of the first quarter
point of the curve.

The height of a building of a falling object above the ground after t seconds can be modeled by a
quadratic function. A ball is thrown directly upward from a height of 48 feet. A ball is thrown directly
upward from a height of 48 feet. The ball’s position above the ground after 1 and 2 secods is shown in
the following table:

Strotium-90 is a waste product from nuclear reactions. Its half life is 28 years, which means that after 28
years a given amount of strontium-90 will have decayed to half the original amount. Unfortunately,
strontium-90 in the atmosphere enters the food chain and is absorbed into our bones. As a consequence
of fallout from atmospheric nuclear test, we all have miserable amount of strontium 90 in our bones.
Suppose a nuclear accident occurs and releases 60 grams of strontium 90 into the atmosphere. How
long will it take for strontium 90 to decay to a level of 10 grams?

Solution:

The rate at which a radioactive matter decays is directly proportional to instantaneous amount at any
given time.

Wherein,

m=mass at any time ( t )

mo=original mass at t=0

ln m−ln m0 =kt

By property of logarithm,

m=mo e kt
Using the concept of half-life,

m= m o , whent=28
2

0.5 m o=mo e k (28 )

e 28 k =0.5
k =−0.0248

m=mo e−0.0248 t

From given the original mass is

m o=60 grams , when t=0

−0.0248 t
Calculating time when m=10 grams using the formula, m=mo e

m=60 e−0.0248 t

Figure shows a three-dimensional frame work subjected to a horizontal force of 10 kN applied at point D. A, B and C are hinged supports. The
reactions at A and C are released in the x – direction. The reaction at B is released at the z – direction.
