What’s In

❖ Flashback
To recall the previous module of this quarter, you have learned how to prove
theorems regarding special parallelograms through various examples using its
properties to find the measures of the angles, the sides and other quantities
involving parallelograms.

To refresh your knowledge about the families of parallelogram, study the

examples with understanding.

Example 1. Two adjacent angles of a parallelogram are (3x-4)0 and (3x+16)0 as

shown below. Find the value of x.

Solutions:
One of the properties of any parallelogram is that
any two consecutive angles are supplementary,
(3𝑥 − 4)0 (3𝑥 + 16)0
which means the sum of any two consecutive
angles is 1800. To solve for x, you will add the
quantity 3x-4 and 3x+16 and equate to 180 since
the two angles are supplementary.
Hence, our equation will be,

(3x-4)+(3x+16)=180 --supplementary angles sum up to 1800

3x+3x-4+16 =180 ----rearrange to easily combine like terms
6x+12 =180 ---combine like terms
-12 -12

6x = 168 ----add both sides of the equation by -12

6x =168
6 6
x =28 divide both sides by 6

Therefore, the value of x is 28.

Example 2. The figure below is a rectangle. Solve for x and determine the measures
of the two angles as illustrated.
Solutions:
To solve for the value of x, base your
solutions to one of the properties of
rectangle which says, “Each diagonal of
any rectangle creates two pairs of
2x-10=x+30 ---alternate interior angles alternate interior angles”. To recall,
are congruent alternate interior angles are congruent.
-x+10=-x+10 ---add both sides by -x+10 Hence, to solve the problem algebraically,

x = 40
Therefore, the value of x is 40.

5
To determine the measures of the angles, just substitute the value of x which is 40
to 2x-10 and x+30. Hence, 2x-10=2(40)-10=700. The other angle is x+30=40+30=700.
The two angles have the same measures which is 700.

To answer the problem in What’s New, take a look at these properties of
TRAPEZOID including its definition.

Trapezoid-a quadrilateral with only one pair of parallel sides. Upper Upper

To clearly visualize the said properties of TRAPEZOID, start by solving the problem
under Try This. Additional examples will be provided to further explain the
properties of trapezoid.

The figure below is a trapezoid. Find the value of x with the given data
as illustrated in the drawing.
T 11ft R Solutions:
CD is the midsegment of trapezoid TRAP. From the
properties of trapezoid, its length is one half the

5𝑥 + 11 − 11 = 36 − 11
5𝑥 = 25 ---add both sides by -11
𝑥=5
Therefore, the value of x is 5.

Study the following examples with understanding.

Example 1. In trapezoid LOVE below, m L=250. Find m E, if LO//EV.

L O Solutions:
25 0
“Each lower base angle is supplementary to the upper
base angle on the same side.”
This property of trapezoid can be used as our basis to solve
E V
for m L, E and L are the lower base and upper base
angles respectively. Therefore, E and L are supplementary
angles. Hence, 𝑚 𝐸 + 𝑚 𝐿 = 1800.
We know that 𝑚 𝐿 = 250, therefore, 𝑚 𝐸 must be 1550.

Example 2. In isosceles trapezoid PURE, PU and ER are the bases. If PE=5x-1 and
UR=2x+5, find the value of x and the length of PE.

Solutions: Hence, solving this algebraically,

In this problem, a drawing/sketch would
help us visualize the isosceles trapezoid. 𝑃𝐸 = 𝑈𝑅
5𝑥 − 1 = 2𝑥 + 5
P U 5x-1-2x+1=2x+5-2x+1

E R Since we already have the value of x, we can now
Since this is an isosceles trapezoid, find the length of PE,
the legs must be equal as stated in 𝑃𝐸 = 5𝑥 − 1 = 5(𝟐) − 1 = 9
one of its properties
Therefore, the value of x is 2 and the length of PE
In an isosceles trapezoid, the legs
is 9 units.
are congruent by definition.

7
Example 3. HOPE is an isosceles trapezoid with HO//EP. If m E=(4x-15)0, and
m P=(3x+1)0, find x.
H O
Solutions:
Another property of an isosceles trapezoid states that
“The lower base angles are congruent”
E (3x + 1)0 P Since E and P are the lower base angles of isosceles trapezoid
HOPE, then they are congruent. Hence,
𝐸= 𝑃
4𝑥 − 15 = 3𝑥 + 1
4𝑥 − 15 − 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏𝟓 = 3𝑥 + 1 − 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏𝟓
𝑥 = 16
Therefore, the value of x is 16.

Example 4. In isosceles trapezoid TANG, AT//GN and AG is a diagonal. Find 𝑚 𝑎.

T A Solutions:
a One of the properties of an isosceles trapezoid is that
“Opposite angles are supplementary.”
𝑁 and 𝑇 are opposite angles, hence, they are
supplementary, their sum is equal to 1800, this means,
300
𝑚 𝑁 + 𝑚 𝑇 = 180 This means that:
G 750 75 + 𝑚 𝑇 = 180 m 𝑇+𝑚 𝐴+𝑚 𝐺 = 180
N
𝑚 𝑇 = 180-75 take note that:
𝑚 𝑇 = 1050 𝑚 𝑇 = 1050 , 𝑚 𝐺 = 300
But we’re looking for and 𝑚 𝐴 = 𝑎
𝑚 𝑎 which is one of the Substituting these values,
angles of TAG. m 𝑇 + 𝑚 𝐴 + 𝑚 𝐺 = 180
Remember that in any 105 + 𝑎 + 30 = 180
triangle, the sum of 𝑎 + 135 = 180
its interior angles is 𝑎 = 180 − 135
always 1800. 𝑎 = 450
Therefore, 𝒎 𝒂 = 𝟒𝟓0.

Example 5. Quadrilateral ZOID is an isosceles trapezoid with OZ//DI. If diagonal

DO=19 units and IZ=7x-2, find x.

Solutions:
Sketch the problem to clearly decide Since “diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid are equal”
what to do. as stated in one of its properties, then,
In this case, it has 𝐼𝑍 = 𝐷𝑂
Z O 7𝑥 − 2 = 19 ---substitute IZ and DO
7𝑥 = 21 ---add both sides by 2
𝑥=3 ---divide both sides by 7
Therefore, the value of x is 3.

10
What Is It?
To answer those questions in What’s New, look at these properties and
definition of Kite, another quadrilateral that is not a parallelogram.
Kite-a quadrilateral with two pairs of congruent and adjacent sides
Properties of Kite
1. Two disjoint pairs of consecutive sides are congruent by definition.
2. The diagonals are perpendicular.
3. One diagonal is the perpendicular bisector of the other.
4. One of the diagonals bisects a pair of opposite angles.
5. One pair of opposite angles are congruent.

We use these properties as our guide as we go on and solve problems involving kites.
Answers to What’s New questions
1. Identify a perpendicular bisector in kite ABCD: Answer: BD
2. Identify an isosceles triangle in kite ABCD: Answer: ABC or ADC
3. Identify a right triangle in kite ABCD: Answer: AMB or CMB or AMD or CMD
Were you able to provide the correct answers to the questions? If your answer is yes,
then you were able to interpret the properties correctly.
To further explain the properties of kite, here are some of the illustrative examples
pertaining to kite. Study the following examples with understanding.
Example 1. In kite HOPE below, two non-congruent sides are given as illustrated.
Find the perimeter of kite HOPE.
E
H Solutions:
One of the properties of kite states “Two disjoint pairs of
P consecutive sides are congruent by definition”.
2𝑥 + 1 O
Disjoint pairs means that one side can’t be used in
both pairs. In this case two pairs of congruent sides
are EH and HO, EP and OP. This means that EH=HO
and OP=EP. To find the perimeter, you have to add all
the sides. Hence, we have,
𝑃 = 𝐸𝐻 + 𝐻𝑂 + 𝑂𝑃 + 𝐸𝑃
𝑃 = 2(3𝑋 − 2) + 2(2𝑥 + 1) since EH=HO and EP=OP
𝑃 = 6𝑥 − 4 + 4𝑥 + 2
𝑃 = 10𝑥 − 2
Therefore, the perimeter of kite HOPE is 10x-2.

Example 2. Use the kite diagram below to find 𝑚 𝑏.

M
Solutions:
b “The diagonals are perpendicular.” This property tells that the diagonals of a
kite create four right triangles. Algebraically,
𝑚 𝑏 + 𝑚 𝑇 + 70 = 180 ----sum of the angles in any triangle is 1800
700 T 𝑏 + 90 + 70 = 180 ----diagonals of a kite form four right angles
E A hence, T is a right angle
𝑏 + 160 = 180
𝑏 = 180 − 160
K 𝑏 = 200 Therefore, 𝒎 𝒃 = 𝟐𝟎0.

11
Example 3-5. Refer to the diagram below to find what is asked.
S 3. Find the value of x of kite SURE at the left.
Solutions:
“One diagonal is the perpendicular bisector of the other.”
This property tells that in a kite, one of the diagonals will be divided into
halves, in this case it’s the shorter diagonal. Hence, in kite SURE at the
𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏 𝒙 + 𝟏𝟑
E V 750 U left, EV=UV. Algebraically,
𝐸𝑉 = 𝑈𝑉 2x= 12
3𝑥 + 1 = 𝑥 + 13 x= 6
3𝑥 − 𝑥 = 13 − 1 Therefore, the value of x is 6.

y z 4. Find 𝑚 𝑦 of kite SURE at the left.

Solutions:
R “One of the diagonals bisects a pair of opposite angles.”
Since the longer diagonal (RS) bisects S and R, then each of these
angles will be divided into halves. From the illustration, R will be
halved, that is y=z. Take note that the sum of the angles of any triangle
is 1800. Hence, from the illustration, ( RVU)
𝑧 + 𝑚 𝑉 + 750=1800 𝑧 = 180 − 165
𝑧 + 90 + 75 = 180 𝑧 = 150
𝑧 + 165 = 180 since y=z, then y=150.

G
5. Find 𝑚 𝑀 of kite GEOM at the left.

Solutions:
M 1150 E ”One pair of opposite angles are congruent.”
In a kite, the opposite angles that are congruent are mostly the angles
that are connected by the shorter diagonal. In kite GEOM, the angles
connected by the shorter diagonal are M and E. If m E=115 0, then
m M=1150.

D 2𝑥 − 6 N

Let x be the measurement of the one side/width of parallelogram WAND,

2𝑥 − 6 be the measurement of the other side/length of parallelogram WAND.
The perimeter is 84 𝑐𝑚
Since the Perimeter is 𝑃 = 2𝑙 + 2𝑤, then

𝑃 = 2𝑙 + 2𝑤
Substitute the measurement represented
84 = 2(2𝑥 − 6) + 2(𝑥)
(the length, width and the perimeter)
84 = 4𝑥 − 12 + 2𝑥
84 + 12 = 4𝑥 + 2𝑥 Combine like terms on the same side of
the equation
96 = 6𝑥
96
=
6𝑥 Simplify by dividing both side by 6 to get
6 6 the value of x
16 = 𝑥 The length of side AN
2𝑥 − 6 = 2(16) − 6 Substitute 𝑥 = 16 to 2𝑥 − 6

= 32 − 6 Simplify
= 26 The length of side DN
