(1) The development of carbon-embedded plastics, otherwise called "composits", is an
important new technology because (2) it holds the key for new aircraft and spacecraft
designs. This is so because (3) these composits are not only stronger than steel but
lighter than aluminum.

(1) Radioactive elements disintegrate and eventually turn into lead. So (2) if matter has
always existed, there should be no radioactive elements left. (3) There are however
many radioactive elements such as uranium left in the world, (4) which shows that
matter has not always existed.

(1) The rainforest of Brazil produces oxygen for the whole world, yet (2) it yields no
monetary return to that country. Given that (3) the industrialised nations consume the
most oxygen, (4) those nations ought to pay Brazil an annual fee for the use of its
rainforest.

(1) The selling of human organs, such as hearts, kidneys, and corneas, should be
outlawed. (2) Allowing human organs to be sold will inevitably lead to a situation in

which only the rich will be able to afford transplants. This is so because (3) whenever
something scarce is bought and sold as a commodity, the price always goes up. (4) The
law of supply and demand requires it.

(1) By making violence real in the cinema, you show people how horrific its
consequences are, and put them off acting violently themselves. (2) Hard violence on
screen may not therefore be as harmful as many people claim. (3) It is the soft, light-
hearted treatment, where fighting is depicted as glamorous, which encourages people
to be aggressive. (4) These films are the ones that should be banned, (5) not those that
depict real brutality.

(1) We must stop treating juveniles differently from adult offenders. (2) Justice demands
it. (3) Justice implies that people should be treated equally. Besides, (4) the social
effects of pampering juvenile offenders has sinister social consequences. (5) The record
shows that juveniles who have been treated leniently for offenses have subsequently
committed serious crimes.

(1) The diet works because (2) it specifically mobilizes fat. (3) It also stimulates the
release of ketoses and fat mobilizers. (4) It causes a disproportionately greater loss of
fat. (5) It helps eliminate excess water. (6) It stabilizes blood sugar. (7) It lowers insulin
levels and cortisol levels. (8) And it delivers a metabolic advantage. (Robert C. Atkins
and Shirley Linde, Dr. Atkins’ Super Energy Diet [New York: Bantam, 1977, p.130.]

(1) Rhinos in Kenya are threatened with extinction because (2) poachers are killing
them for their horn. Since (3) the rhino has no natural predators, (4) it does not need its
horn to survive. Thus (5) there should be an organized program to capture rhinos in the
wild and remove their horns. (6) Such a program would eliminate the incentive of the
poachers.

(1) Society values white lives more than black lives. This is clear from the fact that (2)
killers of whites are much more likely to be sentenced to death than killers of blacks. (3)
Of the 1788 people currently on death row, 1713 were convicted of killing a white
person. Yet (4) blacks are six times more likely to be murder victims than whites are. (5)
In Florida, no one has ever been executed for murdering a black person, but (6) dozens
have been executed for murdering white people.

(1) Many people believe that crime of bribery cannot extend to campaign contributions.
(2) From a legal standpoint, however, countless campaign contributions are in fact
bribes. (3) A bribe is anything of value or advantage given with the intent to unlawfully
influence the person to whom it is given in his official capacity. (4) A campaign
contribution is certainly something of value or advantage. Furthermore, (5) every
contribution from a lobbyist or special interest group is given with the intent to influence
voting, and (6) thousands of such contributions are made in every important election.

(1) We can expect small changes to occur in the length of our calendar year for an
indefinite time to come. (2) This is true for two reasons. (3) First, the rotation of the earth
exhibits certain irregularities. (4) And why is this so? (5) The rotation of any body is
affected by its distribution of mass, and (6) the earth's mass distribution is continually
subject to change. For example, (7) earthquakes alter the location of the tectonic plates.
Also, (8) the liquid core of the earth sloshes as the earth turns, and (9) rainfall
redistributes water from the oceans. The second reason is that (10) the motion of the
tides causes a continual slowing down of earth's rotation. (11) Tidal motion produces
heat and (12) the loss of this heat removes energy from the system. (Isaac Asimov, "As
the World Turns")

The debate
(1) A good God would not allow his or her creatures to suffer pointlessly and an all-
powerful God would be able to prevent pointless suffering. (2) But there is a great deal
of pointless suffering in the world. Therefore, (3) the world could not have been created
by an all-good and all-powerful God.
+
One traditional response to this argument is as follows: (4) suffering is a vital part of a
person’s spiritual and personal development and (5) something vital to spiritual and
personal development is not pointless.
+
↓
One may object to this response however. (6) Rather than contributing to a person’s
spiritual and personal development, suffering is often destructive of that development.
(7) For example, a child that is tortured and murdered has been made to suffer terribly
without that suffering contributing to his/her personal or spiritual growth.

↓
Perhaps a better objection to the traditional argument is this. (8) What we are calling
pointless suffering is a product of the activity of God’s creatures, not God Him/Herself.
(9) These creatures (e.g. humans and fallen angels) create suffering through their willful
actions. (10) Willful actions come about through the exercise of freewill and (11) it is
better for God to have created a world in which certain creatures have freewill than a
world in which they automatically follow a pre-determined path. Thus, (12) a good God
may very well create a world in which creatures inflict pointless suffering upon one
another.

I am leaving out (8) because it does not play a role in the argument, either as a premise
or as a sub-conclusion.
