Pages From Chap 1

The document discusses control and advanced control in industrial processes. It defines control as comparing measurements to setpoints or rolls, while advanced control uses multiple inputs and outputs. Advanced control can improve plant profitability by reducing variability, increasing stability and flexibility, and allowing operators to run closer to optimal conditions.

What is Control?
Originates from Latin "Contrarotulare''
Means to "Compare against the rolls"
Cylindrical records of ancient times
Bureaucrats would receive information about a
parcel and compare against the rolls to decide how
much tax to pay
Control means "the power to act" in this context

What is Advanced Control?

In regulatory control, you look at one input (measurement)
and control it to a target (setpoint) by adjusting one
output/valve. (e.g flow, level, etc.)
Single -Input -
- - Single -
Output (SISO)
In advanced control, you look at many inputs and then
adjust one or more outputs.
- Traditional APC (e.g. Furnace controls)
) Multiple input Single Output (MISO)
-
- Multivariable (Crude Unit, FCCU etc.)
) Multiple Jnput Multiple Qutput (MIMO)

Why should we do advanced control?

A chemical plant or oil refinery business to
make money !
Advanced control can improve plant profitability
in a number of-ways

Incentive for Advanced Control

Reduce variability around setpoint
- allows you to operate closer to a constraint (e.g. less give-away)
More stable and safe operation
- Reduced problems
Increased plant flexibility
- Move from one operating region to another
Allows operators to move closer to optimum operation
Reduction in maintenance
- Good APC moves valves less causing less wear
