STMicroelectronics - LED Drayvera ST

The document discusses power supply requirements for LED lighting applications between 20W to 75W. It focuses on solutions using isolated high power factor flyback (HPFF) topologies. Key requirements discussed include high efficiency (>90%), high power factor (>0.95), low THD, high accuracy, safety, and robustness. Applications mentioned include office, retail, street, and outdoor lighting. The document also covers relevant standards like IEC61000-3-2 class C and notes that constant current output is generally required for direct LED control. ST products mentioned as solutions include HVLED001/003/005 controllers and other driver ICs, MOSFETs, and rectifiers.

Pros and Cons

(+) Reducing voltage stress over diode => lower voltage rated diode = lower diode
conductive loses

(+) Reducing turn ON MOSFETs voltage in QR mode (HVLED001) = reduction of

switching losses in mosfet

(+) Leads to using lower RMS current on the primary side = lower primary
conductive losses

(-) Requiring higher voltage level rated MOSFETs (either higher cost or higher
Rdson)

(-) Leads to higher RMS current on the secondary side = higher conductive losses
in transformer and capacitors

The Rectifiers and Protection

MOSFET protection - Customer challenges 32

• TVS used for MOSFET protection (or IGBT)

• When MOSFET switches off, the transformer

releases its energy

• Voltage at transformer nodes increases

• Voltage seen from MOSFET is

VMOSFET= VIN + VDIODE + VTVS

• When Transformer voltage is too high, the

TVS clamps and avoids VMOSFET > VBR MOSFET

• VMOSFET MAX = VIN + VCL + VF

Implementation

VIN VOUT VIN VOUT VIN VOUT

VDS

- No protection. - RC to limit dV/dt, then to limit - Maximum clamping voltage

overvoltage only depending on STRVS
- Test to be performed to know - slope may vary depending on - datasheet / product adapted
max VDS components to repetitive surges
- margin on VDS is depending - margin on VDS can be easily
- MOS / IGBT to be oversized on components calculated
in voltage (more expensive, - VCL given at very high current - plug and play solution
efficiency drop) with single surge
- test to done for validatation

Using of STVRS bring benefits compare RCD

- Sharp voltage limitation independent on the power flow level
- No power losses at light load => better stand by

DALI on ST Microcontrollers -
Intelligent Control and
Communication in Lighting
DALI – standard for intelligent light control
Definition:

DALI is an international standard (IEC 62386) lighting control system that

provides a single interface for electronic control gears (light sources) and
devices (lighting controllers).

DALI = Digital Addressable Lighting Interface

Why defined:
• Energy saving: Dimming according to natural light, on-off according to
room occupancy
• Comfort: Computer controlled – automation. Color changing
(cool/warm). Improved productivity at work, more relaxing at home.
• Architectural/fashion: Create different effects using same lights
Scene setting for Lounges, Hotels, Restaurants, shops. Building
illumination.
• General light control: For specific application like theater, stage
lighting…

DALI- Ballast 2
 Functions: Dimming, On/off switching, Grouping lights to a MCU
group for common control, Light scene (state with predefined

light properties) storage and selection
 Simple wiring: use 2 standards electrical installation cables
(no special communication cables), no special wiring topology
 Simple installation: cable polarity independency, light source
addressing
 Digital host control: use low cost high performance

 Data rate: 1200 bits/sec DALI- Ballast n
 Physical interface: Low V= -6.5V, High V=+22.5V MCU
 Individual address in command LED Lamp n
 Up to 64 receivers: can be connected to DALI control module
DALI implementation into ST MCU
Software emulation of DALI bus + additional DALI stack = DALI library

• IO pin driver
• Physical and link layer of DALI interface (bit timing, bus error recovery control, DALI
frames transmission/reception)
• Occupied resources:
• 2 GPIO pins – selectable (RX and TX) + 1 GPIO interrupt
• 1 Timer (DALI protocol timing) + 1 Timer interrupt

• DALI stack layer

• DALI commands implementation
• HW independent

• Main user application

ST MCU DALI library – Implementation
1. IO pin driver routines (physical layer)
• Direct pin control
• Interrupt driven reception and transmission (GPIO pins, timer)
• API functions:
• Global initialization
• Callback function initialization (called if DALI frame received)
• Transmit function (called if DALI frame to transmit)

2. DALI stack routines

• DALI commands processing (called from physical layer)
• Required DALI commands according DALI specification
• API functions :
• Initialization of DALI stack and callback function for light control
• Set of functions for error/failure status check

3. Customer firmware Example

• Implementation of callback functions for light control:
• Depends on given light control principle
• Peripherals control for given control (PWM, ADC, DAC, ... )
• Lower layers initialization: IO pin driver, DALI stack
• Calls API functions (transmit, error management, status check functions, ...)
• Implements another customer application details (e.g. LED status, failure
notification, power management, ...)
