Rediscovering History, Heritage and Identity in my Municipality: Barcelona
Let us rekindle ties with our roots. Remember our heritage handed to us from generation to generation. Remember our ancestors, yesteryears and childhood. People may have continued their lives somewhere else, migrated to a foreign land or may have just temporarily left the town but coming home in our hometown always warms the heart of those who are left behind. Along with this town are the stories of the people who lived around and those stories are part of the history, heritage and identity of this municipality. Barcelona is a municipality in Sorsogon province that originated from a small tribal settlement of hunters and fishermen located at the delta of Danlog River. It is formerly known as Danlog. Hunting and fishing was the primitive means of livelihood. The name of the municipality was later changed into Barcelona when the Spaniards invaded the settlement and proclaimed possession over the area under the Spanish crown. Its name is in honor of the capital town of Cataluňa, Spain. Its legal existence as “Pueblo Civil” was declared by virtue of the Royal Decree dated April 16, 1866 from the Superior Government. Barcelona remained a part of the Parish of Bulusan until 1868, it was separated, yet still remained a barrio of Bulusan. Saint Joseph, the Worker is its Titular Head and celebrates town fiesta in his honor every May 19 up to now. The first pastor assigned was Reverend Fr. Mariano F. Garcia. Barcelona became a municipality in the province of Sorsogon in 1901, after Sorsogon became a separate province from Albay on October 17, 1894. Being near in the coastal, Barcelona also experienced Moro pirate raids. A remnant of a watchtower, to serve as a lookout for these Moro raids can still be seen at Barangay Macabari. The glory of the Spanish conquest (1521-1900) left an indelible imprint in the culture of the people, on their religion and traditions. Barcelona was blessed to inherit dynamic infrastructures as seen in the physical profile of the municipality, one of it is the construction of the spacious and architecturally beautiful church built in 1874. It is now on its 147th year but still accommodates the present generation. St. Joseph Church of Barcelona, Sorsogon, as stated on its restoration marker, was considered an important cultural property and it was inscribed in the Philippine Registry of Historical Site and Structure. It was recently restored by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines with funding coming from the National Government. Barcelona Church, is a sort of community pride for us living in Barcelona, this serves as an identity of Barcelona as a Historico-Cultural town. This edifice witnessed the history and heritage of the municipality. It is more than an edifice but an identity for us. Its foundation was not only made of steel and cement but with the story of every Barcelonian who once kneeled or passed-by the Barcelona Church. Simultaneously constructed in 1874 were the two-story “Presidencia” Building and an adjacent “Stone-Building” which also utilized as an Elementary School Building, until a series of typhoons destroyed it. This buildings are living landmarks of the Spanish Colonization Era. Just like this buildings, we, Barcelonians, are brave enough to face different challenges, may it be a series of typhoons or colonizers, we always choose to remain stronger and bolder for we have faith in our Patron, Saint Joseph. There are still more things to be unveiled in the municipality of Barcelona, as a Historico-Cultural town, we are rich in stories about the past. Having an architecturally beautiful church, it motivates the people of Barcelona to be religious and connected in church. Through the intercession of Saint Joseph, God’s abundant graces and blessings are poured out in the lives of Barcelonians as an individual, as a family and as a community. Barcelona has been transformed from a simple barrio into a vibrant, progressive and peaceful town.
