Individual Assignment_2
Marks (10%)

1. If the engineering strain in a tensile bar is 0.0025 and Poisson’s ratio is 0.33, find the original length
and the original diameter if the length and diameter under load are 2.333 ft. and 1.005 in.
respectively.

2. A 0.4-m by 0.4-m square ABCD is drawn on a thin plate

prior to loading. Subsequent to loading, the square
has the dimensions shown by the dashed lines in the
figure. Determine the average values of the plane-
strain components at corner A.
1.

3. A thin plate is subjected to a biaxial stress field of x= 1 Gpa and y= 0.5 Gpa. Calculate the strains in
the xy directions if the plate is made of (a) steel, (b) a 0° unidirectional boron-epoxy composite. For
the boron-epoxy composite use the following properties: Young’s Modulus at 0°=207 Gpa, modulus
at 90° = 19 Gpa, 12=0.21, G12= 6.4 Gpa. Assume for steel a young’s modulus = 207 GPa.

4. For the state of plane stress given, determine the

principal planes, the principal stresses and the
maximum shear stress. Also find the stress
components on the element after it is rotated by 20
clockwise.

5. For the state of plane stress given, using the Mohr’s

circle determine the principal planes, the principal
stresses and the maximum shear stress. Also find the
stress components on the element after it is rotated
by 20 clockwise.

6. If the activation energy for self-diffusion in copper is 2.04 eV/atom and the activation energy for the
migration of a vacancy is 1.08 eV, determine the ratio of the concentration of vacancies present in
equilibrium at 1000 °C to the concentration present in equilibrium at 500 °C.
7. Estimate the equilibrium number of Frenkel defects in AgBr (rock salt structure) at 500 °C. The energy
formation of the defect is 110 kJ/mol, and the entropy of formation is 6.6R. The density and
molecular weight are 6.5 g/cm3 and 187.8 g/mol, respectively. Assume that the Frenkel disorder
occurs on the cation sub-lattice and silver ions go into the tetrahedral sites.

8. For each of edge, screw and mixed dislocations, cite the relationship between the direction of the
applied shear stress and the direction of dislocation line motion.

9. Consider a metal single crystal oriented such that the normal to the slip plane and the slip direction
are at angles of 43.1° and 47.9°, respectively, with the tensile axis. If the critical resolved shear stress
is 20.7 MPa, will an applied stress of 45 MPa cause the single crystal to yield or slip? If not, what
stress will be necessary?

10. A single crystal of a metal that has the FCC crystal structure is oriented such that a tensile stress is
applied parallel to the [110] direction. If the critical resolved shear stress for this material is 1.75 MPa,
calculate the magnitude(s) of applied stress(es) necessary to cause slip to occur on the (111) plane in
each of the [11̅0], [101̅ ]and [011̅ ]directions.

Notice: The assignment should be submitted by the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted
for any reason.
