Cell as a Community
Cell Part Community Function Description
The plasma membrane is what separate’s one cell from
another; it keeps all of the necessary contents of a cell
within the cell much like a city border or if there was a wall
surrounding the city. In addition to structurally keeping
the cell contained, it also acts as a gate. The plasma
membrane is the regulatory system that determines what
is allowed to enter and leave the cell.
The plasma membrane regulates items such as allowing
Plasma Membrane City Border/Gate food and nutrients in, just like a city would allow deliveries
from out of state farms. Once the energy from the food
m
and nutrient’s is consumed it also allows the waste to exit
er as
the cell, just as a garbage truck would bring the trash to a
co
garbage center in a nearby town.

Delivery trucks export resources maid within their city to
other nearby cities, sometimes far away. The City way &

border that allows those items to be exported is also just
rs e like that of the plasma membrane.

DNA is tightly packed into a chromosome; it contains
all of the required information needed to make
proteins. Much like chromosomes; architectural

There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum: Rough
ER contains “bumps,” which are ribosomes. Rough ER
produces proteins (via ribosomes) and then packages
and ships them to other locations inside and outside
of the cell. Smooth ER does not have ribosomes, and
Semi Trucks therefore does not make proteins. Smooth ER makes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Highways / Roads lipids such as carbohydrates, steroids, and fatty acids.
These lipids are then packaged into vesicles and
exported. Both the Rough ER and the Smooth ER can
be compared to semi trucks and highways because
they all package something and export them to their
final destination.
The mitochondria has a critical role in cell function.
This organelle produces energy in the form of ATP. To
do this, mitochondria require a significant amount of
oxygen. The energy produced from mitochondria is

mitochondria is similar to power stations and energy

plants because they all require some type of fuel to

produce energy (such as electricity for the

Lysosomes are vesicles filled with acid that dispose
rs e waste. There are several types of enzymes within a

lysosome, which help destroy the unwanted particles.
This organelle is closely related to real life waste

disposals, because both are used to eliminate trash.
