This Study Resource Was: The Cell As A Community

The document compares various parts of the cell to components of a city or community: - The plasma membrane acts as the city border or gate, regulating what enters and leaves the cell like a city controls deliveries and waste removal. - Chromosomes contain DNA like rolled-up blueprints contain construction plans. - The nucleolus produces ribosomes for protein production, similar to manufacturing companies that produce machinery. - Ribosomes use information from DNA to produce proteins throughout the cytoplasm, similar to factories and lumber yards producing products. - The endoplasmic reticulum packages and ships proteins and lipids to locations inside and outside the cell, comparable to semi-trucks using highways.

The

Cell as a Community
Cell Part Community Function Description
The plasma membrane is what separate’s one cell from
another; it keeps all of the necessary contents of a cell
within the cell much like a city border or if there was a wall
surrounding the city. In addition to structurally keeping
the cell contained, it also acts as a gate. The plasma
membrane is the regulatory system that determines what
is allowed to enter and leave the cell.
The plasma membrane regulates items such as allowing
Plasma Membrane City Border/Gate food and nutrients in, just like a city would allow deliveries
from out of state farms. Once the energy from the food

m
and nutrient’s is consumed it also allows the waste to exit

er as
the cell, just as a garbage truck would bring the trash to a

co
garbage center in a nearby town.

eH w
Delivery trucks export resources maid within their city to
other nearby cities, sometimes far away. The City way &

o.
border that allows those items to be exported is also just
rs e like that of the plasma membrane.
ou urc
DNA is tightly packed into a chromosome; it contains
all of the required information needed to make
proteins. Much like chromosomes; architectural

blueprints contain all of the required information,

and layout needed when constructing a building.

They can safely be stored here until needed.

Located inside the nucleus, the nucleolus produces
ribosomes, which are then used to make proteins.

Located in an area near the center of the city are

usually manufacturing plants. Products are assembled

here to fulfill the requirements of which they will be
sent. Similarly, manufacturing companies produce

machinery that is then used to produce various

products.

Ribosomes are granular bodies located throughout

the cell cytoplasm. They fabricate proteins by using
information found within DNA. Ribosomes are similar

Ribosomes to city factories because both are using information

Lumber or Brick Yard
of some sort to produce an end product. Ribosomes
are also similar to lumbar yards because there are a
large quantity of them scattered throughout the cell.

There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum: Rough
ER contains “bumps,” which are ribosomes. Rough ER
produces proteins (via ribosomes) and then packages
and ships them to other locations inside and outside
of the cell. Smooth ER does not have ribosomes, and
Semi Trucks therefore does not make proteins. Smooth ER makes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Highways / Roads lipids such as carbohydrates, steroids, and fatty acids.
These lipids are then packaged into vesicles and
exported. Both the Rough ER and the Smooth ER can
be compared to semi trucks and highways because
they all package something and export them to their
final destination.
The mitochondria has a critical role in cell function.
This organelle produces energy in the form of ATP. To
do this, mitochondria require a significant amount of
oxygen. The energy produced from mitochondria is

Mitochondria then used for all sorts of cellular functions. The

m
mitochondria is similar to power stations and energy

plants because they all require some type of fuel to

produce energy (such as electricity for the

community).

Lysosomes are vesicles filled with acid that dispose
rs e waste. There are several types of enzymes within a
ou urc
lysosome, which help destroy the unwanted particles.
This organelle is closely related to real life waste

disposals, because both are used to eliminate trash.
o

Also, if a waste disposal were to leak into a river, it

could start to kill living species. Likewise, a lysosome

will destroy cellular components if it bursts.

The main function of the golgi apparatus is to
package lipids and proteins that will then be shipped

to specific destinations. Carbohydrates are also

fabricated within this organelle. During the packaging

where to go. This process is similar to a shipping
center/postal shop, because just like a molecule is

tagged, packages receive postal addresses so that
