PROCEDURE FOR CHEMICAL CLEANING

OF HEAT EXCHANGER/ FIN FAN COOLER

PURPOSE
This procedure is for chemically cleaning heat exchanger/ coolers in contact with seawater
to remove seawater scales efficiently and safely.

INTRODUCTION
Internal surfaces of heat exchanging system are cleaned to remove contaminants and scale
deposits which impair heat transfer and decrease efficiency.

Dissolved salt in water, specially calcium and magnesium forms dense scales, which are
quite adherent and difficult to remove. Scales may also originate in the system itself as
corrosion products.

Acid Cleaning - General

Acid cleaning requires careful implementation for each step. The solution of pH, Fe
content, temperature, flow rate etc. shall be carefully monitored. Otherwise, serious
damage could be done to the equipment. Furthermore, the possibility of acid entrapment
in crevices and stagnant ends is alarming and some severe corrosion could be expected.

Selection of Sulphamic Acid as Solvent

The chemical solutions used in cleaning are generally formulated specifically for each job
on the basis of scale chemical analysis. The majority of water formed scales yield to hot
diluted cleaning acids. Sulphamic acid HSO3, NH2, in spite of being more expensive than
other cleaning acids, it offers several advantages. It is a white crystalline solid that, when
dry, has negligible effect on the skin or clothing. It is easily handled in the dry state,
facilitating weighing and the preparation of solutions of accurate concentrations.

Pre Cleaning Inspection

The heat exchange tubes to be cleaned should be inspected before the acid cleaning.
Remove channel cover, flush all tubes internally with water and plugged tubes should be
mechanically cleaned to permit the acid to pass through it.

Equipment required to carry out the work

Portable tank with adequate capacity to prepare the solution with sample point, inlet and
outlet connections. The tank outlet, i.e. the pump suction connection should be at least
10cm high from tank bottom to avoid pumping of sludge.

- Pump to circulate the solution keeping in mind that the circulation velocity should
not exceed 1.5 m/sec.
- Heating element (steam coil) shall be installed in the solution tank.

Selection of Sulphamic Acid Brand

The sulphamic acid used for cleaning shall be inhibited to dissolve scales without
appreciable attack on the metal to be cleaned. Different types of inhibitor are used such
as anilines, pyridines, thiourea, and arsenates and sulfonated caster oil. Different types of
metals are used in seawater exchangers and desalinators such as;

- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Al-Brass
- Monel
- Cupro-Nicket
- Titanium

Lab. Test shall be conducted on each brand of sulphamic acid offered to determine the
most suitable brand. This test is carried out by immersion of tubes specimens of each
type of metals of different equipment, which will be cleaned by the acid in 10% sulphamic
acid solution for about 24 hours at 50C o. The percentage of weight loss and the corrosion
rates will determine the suitable brand to be use.

In case materials of construction include titanium, the solution prepare of the acid should
show presence of Ferric and Cupric ions to avoid hydriding of titanium.

Acid Solution Preparation

Prepare a 5-10% solution of sulphamic acid in clean water. Solution volume should be
equal to the volume to be cleaned plus volume of solution to keep the level in the tank
enough for the pump suction.

Cleaning Operation:

1. Once solution is prepared, pH of solution should be checked and recorded.

2. In case of heat exchanger, connect the pump discharge to the seawater inlet and
connect the seawater outlet to the inlet in the tanks.
3. Start circulation and check pH at the beginning every 30 minutes then every one hour.
4. Cleaning action is accelerated when solution is heated and maintained at 50Co.
5. Replenish the acid consumed when the pH of the solution is higher than 4 Maintain
the pH between 2-4.
6. Reverse circulation through the exchanger for 2 hours at least.
7. In the case of inbuilt pH colour indicator, when the colour indicator in the acid solution
changes it colour, it means that approximately 80-85% of acid exhausted. Cleaning is
completed when the pH of the acid solution shows no change in 30 minutes for hot
solution or 2 hours for cold solution.

Neutralization
1. When cleaning is completed, the acid solution is neutralized prior to dumping to plants
sewer system. The cleaned unit is thoroughly flushed with water.
2. Continue flushing with water until pH of the water coming out is equal to that of the
water coming in.

As stated previously, dry sulphamic acid present no special safety problems although
prolonged contact can cause irritation and should be countered by wearing gloves. When
dissolved in water, Operator must wear protective goggles and gloves. Splashes on the
skin should be well washed with water and splashed in the eyes treated with running
water.
