PURPOSE
This procedure is for chemically cleaning heat exchanger/ coolers in contact with seawater
to remove seawater scales efficiently and safely.
INTRODUCTION
Internal surfaces of heat exchanging system are cleaned to remove contaminants and scale
deposits which impair heat transfer and decrease efficiency.
Dissolved salt in water, specially calcium and magnesium forms dense scales, which are
quite adherent and difficult to remove. Scales may also originate in the system itself as
corrosion products.

- Pump to circulate the solution keeping in mind that the circulation velocity should
not exceed 1.5 m/sec.
- Heating element (steam coil) shall be installed in the solution tank.
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Al-Brass
- Monel
- Cupro-Nicket
- Titanium
Lab. Test shall be conducted on each brand of sulphamic acid offered to determine the
most suitable brand. This test is carried out by immersion of tubes specimens of each
type of metals of different equipment, which will be cleaned by the acid in 10% sulphamic
acid solution for about 24 hours at 50C o. The percentage of weight loss and the corrosion
rates will determine the suitable brand to be use.
In case materials of construction include titanium, the solution prepare of the acid should
show presence of Ferric and Cupric ions to avoid hydriding of titanium.
Cleaning Operation:
Neutralization
1. When cleaning is completed, the acid solution is neutralized prior to dumping to plants
sewer system. The cleaned unit is thoroughly flushed with water.
2. Continue flushing with water until pH of the water coming out is equal to that of the
water coming in.
SAFETY
As stated previously, dry sulphamic acid present no special safety problems although
prolonged contact can cause irritation and should be countered by wearing gloves. When
dissolved in water, Operator must wear protective goggles and gloves. Splashes on the
skin should be well washed with water and splashed in the eyes treated with running
water.
