Morse code is used when writing or speaking may not be practical. Every letter and number
has a unique code that may be sent audibly or visually. With practice it is possible to send and receive
Morse code at very fast speeds.
For this exercise it is not necessary to memorize all the letters and symbols used in Morse
code, but to understand how they are used. This worksheet is designed to help you understand how
to send and receive Morse code. If you want to learn Morse code and be proficient in it's use try
visiting terra.org's web site at http://terra.org and playing the Morse code game.
Part One
Instructions: To fill in the blanks below use the following words: Morse code, spaces, dot, dash,
static, and full stop.
1. spaces Dots and dashes are separated by these, each one equal to the length of a dot.
2. static This can make voice messages, sent over a radio, hard to understand.
3. Morse code A system of "dots" and "dashes" used to communicate when voice or other
systems cannot be used.
4. dash The length of this sound is three times as long as the length of a dot.
5. full stop This is used to mean the end of an idea. It can also be used instead of a period.
6. dot The length of this sound is short, three times it's length makes a dash.
Part Two
Instructions: Use the table of Morse code translations to fill in either the dots and dashes or the
letters that are missing from the problems below.
Example: The code -.-. .- - is CAT.
Part Three
Instructions: Match the messages with the Morse code. Write the letter of the code on the blank by
the message that it matches.
