Chapter
1 Characteristic IN (option)
Module Function
Q-DAS converter Converts characteristic data in Q-DAS format into characteristics of
a CALYPSO measurement plan.
STEP AP 203 Loads CAD model data for conversion into features and for repre-
sentation in CALYPSO.
Agipp converter Converts XML files in the Agipp format into a CALYPSO measure-
ment plan.
NOTE
If identical characteristic numbers are used for the same characteristics
when designing variants, this also forms the basis for uniform measur-
ing planning and measurement program creation throughout the differ-
ent branches of a company.
Requirements for the Characteristic data and CAD model data must meet the following re-
input data quirements before the Characteristic IN option can convert them into
features of a CALYPSO measurement plan:
– The data must have been created using a ProE or UG (Unigraphics)
CAD system and have been converted into a STEP file in the AP 203
or AP 214 format.
– The required feature data must be available as ASCII data in the
QDAS format.
The formatting must have been created on the basis of a WEPROM
specification. The Q-DAS data must have been processed using the
PE-Inspect program from PTC or with the BCT-Inspector program
from BCT.
You can use the Characteristic IN option only if your input data meets
these requirements.

NOTE
The stylus simulation and the stylus system creator as well as the DMIS
export are additional options of CALYPSO. They are described in sepa-
rate manuals.
NOTE
Thus you determine at the same time the strategy settings of CALYPSO
which are effective throughout the measurement plan.
Q-DAS conformity Depending on the contents of the K2001 and K2002 fields, you can also
import the characteristic from K2002 and assign K2001 as the “charac-
teristic name”.
Run To generate a measurement plan from CAD data, proceed as follows:
– To prepare the generation of the measurement plan, you must carry
out the following steps:
– Enter the rules for the conversion of cylinders
– Determine the default measurement strategies
– Specify the characteristic list and CAD-STEP file
– Start generation (first stage)
– Modify the loaded CAD model and define the base alignment, if nec-
essary
– Continue generation (second stage):

6 Activate the Rules tab and enter the criteria according to which
cylinders are to be transferred from the CAD data to the conversion
list for conversion to circles.
By activating one or more of the offered characteristics, all those
cylinders are added to the list for which no additional characteristics
are defined in the measurement plan than the activated ones.
Additionally, you can specify a geometric rule according to which the
cylinders to be entered in the list are further specified.
7 Activate the Strategy defaults tab.
8 Tick the check boxes for all feature types for which you want to de-
fine a default strategy and click each Settings button.
9 In the Strategy dialog box that opens, define the default measure-
ment strategy according to which the features of the corresponding
type are to be measured.
Note: Thus you determine at the same time the strategy settings of
CALYPSO which are effective throughout the measurement plan. For
all non-activated feature types, the existing CALYPSO strategy de-
faults will be used.
Note: If a certain feature is to be measured using a strategy that de-
viates from the default measurement strategy, you must enter this
strategy for the feature concerned after the automatic generation.
10 If all entries are correct, click Generate Measurement Plan.
The measurement plan generator loads the CAD model and stops
then.
11 If needed, modify the CAD model and define the base alignment.
12 Select Continue generation to continue the generation.
The measurement plan generator creates the characteristics and fea-
tures.
After generation, you will see on the Generate tab under Program
Status how many features and characteristics have been created
and how many of which are completely defined.
OK Cancel
The list shows all cylinders of the CAD data. The designations of the
cylinders (identifiers) have been taken over from the STEP data record of
the CAD system.
If you have not defined the base alignment during the generation of
measurement plans after loading the CAD model, you must define it
now after the generation of the measurement plan body.
For more information, please refer to the Basic Operating Instructions
under Setting the base / start alignment.
NOTE
The following files can be viewed in CALYPSO:
The Agipp_ln.xsd schema file with the syntax and the general structure
of the XML file
The Agipp_ln.xls Excel description file with explanations on the XML file
elements
(“ln” in the file name stands for the language abbreviation; en = Eng-
lish).

2 Click Load data and select the corresponding XML file in the file se-
lection window.
The Open button appears. You can open and view the XML file.
3 Only in case you do not want to use the measurement strategies in-
cluded in the XML file: Activate the Strategy defaults tab and tick
the check boxes for those feature types you want to define a default
strategy for.
4 Click the corresponding Settings button and, in the Strategy dia-
log box, specify the default strategy for measuring the features of
the type concerned.
These strategy defaults will only be used if no particular strategy has
been defined for the respective feature in the XML file.
Note: Thus you determine at the same time the strategy settings of
CALYPSO which are effective throughout the measurement plan. For
all non-activated feature types, the existing CALYPSO strategy de-
faults will be used.
5 Activate the Settings tab and tick the desired check boxes:
Trigger: If the XML file contains both data for scanning and for
discrete-point (single-point) probing, you select discrete-point
measurement with this check box.
Group Characteristics for each Feature: For each feature, an
individual group composed of the corresponding characteristics
will be created in the measurement plan.
Use Feature name for Characteristic: The name of the corre-
sponding feature will be used as name prefix for all characteristics
not having their own name in the XML file.
Use default name for Characteristics: All characteristics get
the default names defined in CALYPSO, even if they have their
own name in the XML file.
Create New Measurement Plan (activated by default): A new
measurement plan is generated from the Agipp data. To extend
an existing measurement plan, untick the check box and open the
measurement plan to be extended.
Generate Features (activated by default): Generates the fea-
tures included in the Agipp file.
Generate Characteristics (activated by default): Generates the
characteristics included in the Agipp file.
Update Measurement Plan: The features in the currently open
measurement plan are overwritten by the features of the Agipp
file if they are of a more recent date.
Note: You can use this tab to open and view the schema file for
loading the XML file as well as the corresponding description.
6 If all entries are correct, click Generate Measurement Plan.
The measurement plan generator loads the data and creates the
measurement plan. If the name contained in the XML file exists al-
ready, you may have this measurement plan extended or updated or
save the new measurement plan under a different name.
After that, the features, characteristics and, if necessary, the base
alignment will be created. This will be followed by an update of the
CAD window.
After generation, you will see on the Generate tab under Program
Status how many features and characteristics have been created
and how many of which are completely defined.
