GUIDELINES FOR WRITING A FUNNY STORY

The humor in a funny story should simply complement the story, giving it style and making it
more enjoyable to read.

Before writing

Take note of the things around you, especially those that tickle your funny bone. It is nothing
but creativity and observation that you need in order to write your own hilarious masterpiece!
You can
go for a completely unrealistic, fairy tale like story but with a twist.
argue for a ridiculous side of one issue.
show one normal person in his/ her everyday life filled with humor and laughter.

While writing

You can include humor through

 Character
give your characters a sense of humor- particularly the central character whose viewpoint
you are likely to be writing from- their voice can add a comedic tone to the story in a
natural way. For example, they might make funny observations about events, the
situation or other characters and use amusing synonyms.

 Situation
The way the characters react to the situations that makes it funny, not the situation itself.

 Dialogue
What characters say and how they react to what is said can be very funny.

After writing

Review your writing and identify the spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. Also, observe the
punctuations like commas and periods, and correct where you feel necessary.

N.B: One thing to remember while writing a funny story: you should be very careful about the
characters and the way the story idea is presented to the readers. Keep in mind that what may
seem funny to you, may end up hurting someone else's feelings and sentiments. For example,
creating a character that is physically unfit and making fun of that particular character for
making the story funny, would rather portray your insensitivity instead of your sense of humor.
