Research Method: Survey Research Is Defined As "The Collection of Information From A Sample of Individuals

Quantitative research methods use statistical analysis of data from sources like surveys and questionnaires. There are three main descriptive research designs: case studies that analyze one subject in depth, naturalistic observation of subjects in their natural environment, and survey research that collects data through questions. Surveys can be questionnaires with written questions or interviews with spoken questions and answers. The research process involves defining the problem, designing the study, determining sampling and measurement, collecting and analyzing data, and developing conclusions.

Activity 1 | Research Documentation

1. Explain what is quantitative research method?

Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,

mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and
surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.

2. Describe the three types of descriptive research designs?

A case study is an in-depth study of one person, group, or event. In a case study, nearly
every aspect of the subject's life and history is analyzed to seek patterns and causes of
behavior. Case studies can be used in a variety of fields including psychology, medicine,
education, anthropology, political science, and social work. Naturalistic observation is
a research method that is used by psychologists and other social scientists. The technique
involves observing subjects in their natural environment. It can be used if conducting lab
research would be unrealistic, cost-prohibitive, or would unduly affect the subject's behavior.
Survey research is defined as "the collection of information from a sample of individuals
through their responses to questions". This type of research allows for a variety of methods to
recruit participants, collect data, and utilize various methods of instrumentation.

3. Differentiate the two types of survey?

A questionnaire is a research instrument that consists of a set of questions or other

types of prompts that aims to collect information from a respondent. An interview is a
conversation for gathering information. A research interview involves an interviewer, who
coordinates the process of the conversation and asks questions, and an interviewee, who
responds to those questions.

4. What are the Research Processes?

The research process involves identifying, locating, assessing, and analyzing the
information you need to support your research question, and then developing and expressing
your ideas.

5. What is Problem Definition?

A research problem is a specific issue, difficulty, contradiction, or gap in knowledge that

you will aim to address in your research.
6. What is Research Design?

The research design refers to the overall strategy that you choose to integrate the
different components of the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby, ensuring you will
effectively address the research problem; it constitutes the blueprint for the collection,
measurement, and analysis of data.

7. What is Sampling Design?

Sampling design is a mathematical function that gives you the probability of any
given sample being drawn.

8. What is Measurement Concepts?

The process or the act of measurement consists of obtaining a quantitative comparison

between a predefined Standard and a Measurand.

9. What are Data Collection and Data Sources?

Data collection is the process of gathering and measuring information on variables of

interest, in an established systematic fashion that enables one to answer
stated research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes. A data source is the
location where data that is being used originates from.

10. What is Descriptive Statistics?

Descriptive statistics are used to describe the basic features of the data in a study. They
provide simple summaries about the sample and the measures. Together with simple graphics
analysis, they form the basis of virtually every quantitative analysis of data.
