CLADDING

Building Construction and Materials IV

INTRODUCTION
The term 'cladding' refers to components that are attached to the primary
structure of a building to form non-structural, external surfaces. Building cladding
is the exterior skin or envelope or finish material, and includes all moisture
barriers and siding materials used to cover a structure.

Whilst cladding is generally attached to the structure of the building, it typically

does not contribute to its stability. However, cladding does play a structural role,
transferring wind loads, impact loads, snow loads and its own self-weight back
to the structural framework.

TYPES OF CLADDING:
On the basis of method of application and the material to be applied, cladding
can be of two types: Wet Cladding and Dry Cladding.

▪ Wet Cladding: In case of wet cladding, the cladding material is pressed

on the surface with help of adhesive or liquid latex. The bonding of
cladding material to surface depends upon tensile strength of adhesive
and no on-site drilling is required.

▪ Dry Cladding: It involves drilling holes into the surface, fixing the
anchoring system, installation of framework and then fixing the cladding
material in the framework. The bonding of cladding to surface depends
upon anchor grout pull off strength with the surface.

USES:
Cladding is needed to:

▪ Create a controlled internal environment.

▪ Protect the building from external conditions.
▪ Provide privacy and security.
▪ Prevent the transmission of sound.
▪ Provide thermal insulation.
▪ Create an external facade.
▪ Prevent the spread of fire.
▪ Generate an 'airtight' building envelope.
▪ Providing openings for access, daylight and ventilation.
APPLICATION METHODS:
Direct Adhered: A type of wet cladding where adhesive is applied directly and
cladding material is pressed on surface.

Mechanical Bonding: It is a type of dry cladding. This method involves fixed

or embedded anchors or ties used to attach the cladding material to the
surface.

Spot Bonding: It is a method of wet cladding which is similar to the direct

adhered but adhesive is only applied to about 10% of the area resulting in gaps
or pockets of air between cladding material and surface.

Aluminium/ Steel Backing: It is a method of dry cladding, in which the
material is shaped to fit the surface perfectly and to interlock with each other
before being mounted to the surface using runner clips.

EXAMPLES:
GRC or GFRC: Glass reinforced concrete (GRC), or glass-fiber reinforced
concrete (GFRC), is a construction material that is commonly used to form
exterior cladding panels.

GFRC is a cement product based on material mixed with fiberglass. It is
composed from high-strength, alkali-resistant glass fibers embedded in a concrete
matrix. The fibres act as the principal load-carrying component, while the
surrounding matrix keeps them in position, and transfers load between the fibers.

GFRC is lightweight and can replicate terracotta, granite, limestone or any other
natural material and can also be finished with paints. Its installation is quick and
easy and the nature of concrete acts like a thermal regulator when exposed to
flames. The strength of GFRC cladding is determined by glass content, fiber
size and compaction, distribution as well as degree of cure.
