IMC Singapore Problem-Solving Series (SELECTED PROBLEMS) : Solution

1) The problem determines a quadratic function y=ax^2 +bx+c that passes through point M(0,1) and has x-intercepts A and B whose x-coordinates sum to 6. It is given the ratio of the areas of triangles MAB and NAB is 1:2, where N is the vertex. 2) The second problem refers to an isosceles right triangle ABC with additional points D and E on hypotenuse AB. The angle DCE is 45 degrees, AE=3 and BD=5. It asks for the length of DE.

IMC Singapore Problem-Solving Series (SELECTED PROBLEMS)

By Josh Robert Obaob

1. Determine a second degree function y=a x2 +bx +c whose graph passes through M ( 0,1 )and
intersects with x-axis at points A and B. Likewise, the sum of the square of the x-coordinates of A and B is 6
with N as the vertex of the graph which is located at x-axis and S∆ MAB : S∆ NAB =1:2.

SOLUTION:
Since M ( 0,1 ), then c=1.
