Robin Li, born Li Yanhong, is a Chinese internet entrepreneur and software engineer.

They are
known for being the Founder and Ceo of Baidu, a Chinese search engine. Baidu is the most
utilized and trusted search engine in China, with almost 75% of the nation’s search results, as of
2019.

Li Yanhong was born on 17 November 1968 in a north-east China city, Yangquan. This city is
known as the gateway of Shanxi Province, China, the leader of coal mining states in China,
producing almost a third of its production alone. As a result, Yangquan is one of the most
industrialized cities in the province.

Li was the fourth of all five children in his family and the only male child born to humble factory
workers. While growing up, the person he most admired was his third elder sister. She attended
Peking University, which is one of the most prestigious and ancient universities in China. As a
result, he too worked hard, without minding his humble start, and was able to gain admission to
the same university. His mother was the driving force behind his education as she knew that the
only way to change her children’s destiny was to ensure they studied.
For the next three years, he studied Information Management at Peking University. His efforts
bore fruit as in the fall of 1991, he went to the United States of America to look for a doctorate in
Computer Science at the University of Buffalo. He decided not to pursue further education and
received his Master’s Degree in 1994.

After completing his studies, Robin Li joined the IDD Information Services in 1994. IDD
Information Servies was a separate New Jersey Division of the famous Dow Jones & Company.
He helped the company develop a software program for an online version of the Wall Street
Journal.
In 1995, he met Dongmin Ma, a Biology graduate from new Jersey University, at a gathering of
Chinese overseas students and fell in love. After six months of dating, they got married and had a
daughter.
Robin Li was working on improving search engines, and after three years of work, he created
Rankdex. Rankdex was the first search engine that used an algorithm that determined the quality
of websites from their hyperlinks while indexing them. This algorithm was also awarded a U.S.
Patent and was one of the referenced works in the development of Google by Larry Page.
Rankdex was also one of the most critical discoveries of his life as when he finally returned to
China a few years later; he used the Rankdex Patent to create Baidu.
In July 1997, Li joined Infoseek, a leader in the internet search-engine market. It was here that he
developed the picture search function, which was then utilized by Go.com.

In 1999 Robin founded Baidu with Dr. Eric Xu. Within two years, this search engine became
famous throughout China due to its effective and easy user interface. Since it also used Rankdex
technology, it was able to index the various websites based upon their quality, which further
cemented its reputation in China. In 2001, Mr. Robin Li was named one of the “Chinese Top 10
Innovative Pioneers”, in 2002 and 2003, he was named one of the “IT Ten Famous Persons.”
Baidu utilized the quality and keywords to index webpages in an ordered manner. Although
Baidu was a groundbreaking technology, it could not provide any profit-points. Then Mr. Robin
devised an idea where the companies bid for various keywords that people would search for
specific periods. This led to a boom in revenue, and Baidu soon became profitable.
It then acquired “Hao123” in 2004, which was then the most utilized and biggest index library
for websites. This led to Baidu surpassing “Yahoo search” and becoming the largest search
engine in China and the second-largest independent search engine in the world.

On 5 August 2005, Baidu completed its IPO on NASDAQ, and in 2007 became the first Chinese
company to be included in the NASDAQ-100 Index. He appeared in CNN Money's annual list of
"50 people who matter now" in 2007.

Since then, Baidu has retained its position as the largest search engine in China and has ventured
into many internet fields. Currently, Mr.Robin Li has a net worth of $6billion, mainly of which is
thanks to Baidu.
