Chapter 3: Ethics and Law in Corporate Communication.

 Importance of Ethics in Corporate Communication:


1.) Satisfying basic human needs.
2.) Creating credibility.
3.) Uniting people and leadership.
4.) Improving decision making.
5.) Long term gains.
6.) Securing the society.

 Code of Ethics & the Implementation:


1.) A code is a statement of policies & rules or principles that guide behavior.
2.) Appointment of a committee includes internal & external directors.
3.) Functions are:
a. Communication of code to all members.
b. Hold regular meetings to discuss the ethical issues.
c. Check the possibility of violation.
d. Enforcing the code.
e. Dealing with grey area i.e., matter or grave concern.
f. Rewarding all those who follow & punish all those who violate.
g. Reviewing & updating the code.
h. Reporting the activities to the board of directors.

 Corporate Communication & Professional Code of Ethics:


1.) Adopted by the public relations society of India at all India Public Relations
Conference in New Delhi, April 21, 1968.
2.) Countries of the UNO have agreed to abide by the charter.
3.) Reaffirm its faith in human dignity.’
4.) Practioners can meet up to the social moral need.
5.) Use of technique that would enable them to reach out to masses and would need to
be retained be a code of conduct.
6.) In case of violation of the code then the person would be liable for misconduct and
would be penalized.
7.) A member would:
a. Contribute towards achieving the moral and cultural rights that would
enable the human being to enjoy their rights granted under the universal
declaration of Human rights.
b. Conduct themselves such that they deserve and secure the confidence of
their peers and associates.
c. To balance has conduct in his professional and personal life as it may have a
cascading effect.
d. To maintain channels of communication to ensure free flow of information
so that all are made party to the communication and all are involved and are
equally responsible.
8.) A member shall undertake to:
a. To observe the principles and rules of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights.
b. Uphold dignity and to recognize the rights of all individuals.
c. To act in the interest of all concerned within and outside of the organization.
d. To enable the atmosphere for any dialogue and to recognize the rights of all
parties to express their views.
e. Being balanced in one’s approach.
9.) A member shall retrain from:
a. Circulation information which is not based on facts.
b. Taking part in ventures that are unethical or dishonest.
c. Using manipulative or techniques to wrongly motivate the individuals such
that they cannot act as per their own free will.

 Personal Credo of Bateman:


Based on extracts from the speech of general chairman of the 7 th Public Relations World
Congress held from August 11-14 1975.
1.) I believe the PR should not deal with a manipulation of people, but continuously give
information.
2.) I believe PR practice should elevate the audience and all communication should be
rational rather than being emotional and pre-judiced.
3.) I believe that PR policies should be based on truth, rather than deception.
4.) I believe that as I may know/ understand on point or view, I would give a chance for
the opponent point of view. I recognize that I have the right to express myself as
such so do all included those that are unpopular.
5.) I believe that all should have the right to express on political economic ideas as in
case of a democratic set up.
6.) In case of disagreement, public interest would take precedence over the stand taken
to represent a few.
7.) I believe that all actions have an effect don the human mind & hence one must do
one’s task with reverence.

 The Code of Athens:


Adopted by the general assembly of the International Public Relations Associations of Athens
1965, then modified in the year 1968.
13 clauses in 3 sections:
(A) A member shall comply with:
1.) To contribute to the achievement of moral & cultural conditions that human is
entitled to under the Universal Declaration of Human rights.
2.) Establish communication patterns to ensure free flow of information.
3.) To maintain a balance between professional and personal life.
4.) To respect the moral principles and professional duties and the rules of Universal
Declaration of Human Rights.
5.) Uphold human dignity and the right of individuals to judge for themselves.
6.) To encourage dialogue with all and permit the expression of views.

(B) A member shall undertake:

1.) To conduct himself in a manner to give and get confidence of all those whom he
comes in contact with.
2.) To act in accordance with the interest of himself and of the public at large.
3.) To carry out his duties with integrity avoid language that leads to ambiguity and
misunderstanding.
(C) A member shall refrain from:

1.) Circulating information which is not based on facts.


2.) Taking part in ventures that are unethical or dishonest.
3.) Being imbalanced in one’s approach.
4.) Using manipulative techniques to wrongly motivate the individuals such that they
cannot act as per their own free will.
