TECHNOLOGY AFFECTING STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ONLINE

LEARNING
Rationale
Education is one of the most important aspects of Human Development as it
enhances people's awareness of themselves and world. Academic performance is
anything that students achieve in class, a laboratory, a library, or field work at school,
college, or university. Students are the most important assets in school. Their academic
performance plays an important role in creating the quality of an alumna who will
become a leader and manpower of our country and responsible for the country’s social
and economic development (Ali et.al, 2009).
Since the start of the pandemic, schools have thought various strategies to cope
up with the situation and decided to adopt distance learning which includes purely
online classes, blended learning of online and modular classes, and purely modular
classes. With this, students have encountered different factors influencing their studies.
With the new normal setting, students are exposed to radiation for long hours,
which causes most health of the students to be affected such as experiencing migraines
and headaches, and sometimes lack of sleep which hinders students in attending
classes or doing the activities. Study environment includes students’ area in taking
classes which is most likely at home, with all the exposure to various types of noise
including external, environmental noise, and noise generated within the perimeters of
the house, which can reduce memory, motivation, reading ability, and focus in class.
Students also developed new habits in studying in order to adjust with the new normal
class setting, and to be able to pace up with the teaching method used by the teachers
which includes whether the teachers are giving notes, discussing them, or not.
Attending classes from home means overlapping responsibilities with the ones at school
and at home, or the ones at school and at work, or both. With the online setting, the
channel of learning is mostly the internet, but in some areas, there are students who
have difficulty in accessing internet or cannot access the internet at all. Also, while most
students possess outdated versions of gadgets that cannot cater the applications
needed for online class, there are also some that do not possess anything at all.

There are several factors that affect the academic performance of the student but
the researchers have filtered and only include in the study those that greatly affect the
students in this new normal setting. The respondents of the study are 30 second-year
Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) students of University of Bohol for the school
year 2020-2021. Through the predicaments experienced by the students, the
researchers are triggered to conduct this study to examine the different factors affecting
the academic performance of the students in the hope that the teaching staff as well as
the students would be enlightened of the unprecedented educational crisis.

Statement of the Problem
The main purpose of this study was to examine the possible factors affecting the
academic performance of the second-year Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA)
students of University of Bohol for the school year 2020-2021.
Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:
1) What is the academic profile of the students?
2) What is the level of perception of the students towards technology used in online
learning?
3) Is there a relationship between the academic profile of a student and these
factors?

Statement of Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis: There is no relationship between technology and student’s
academic performance in online learning.
Alternative Hypothesis: There is a relationship between technology and student’s
academic performance in online learning.

Statistical Treatment
The following were used in the analysis and interpretation of the data. Tables
were used for the presentation of data to facilitate understanding. Frequency and
percentage were used to facilitate the analysis of data.
For the academic profile of the respondents, the CHED grading scale is used:

The data collected for the independent variable was based on the scores obtained
from the survey. The questionnaire consists of ten statements where the scale used
is presented below:

The researchers used two-tailed test at 5% level of significance. Degree of


freedom was determined using the formula:

To further test the significant relationship between technology and student’s
academic performance, the Pearson r formula and the scale for interpretation are
used for analysis.
