2 INTRODUCTION

PRACTICUM is a college course often in a specialized field of study that is

designed to give students supervised practical application of a previously studied
theory.  Theoretical knowledge cannot be completely fulfilled until and unless
going through the practical realization of the architectural answer..During the
theory class, drawings are limited to papers and therefore students remain
unaware about various factors that effect practical design such as – feasibility of
design, labor and technology available, structural limitation, client’s financial
afford legal procedures, design ethics etc. Architecture remains incomplete unless
the drawing stands out from paper to reality .Hence, in the curriculum of bachelor
degree of architecture prescribed by Pokhara University, fourth year second part
is given for practicum where the architectural students are acquainted with the
practical knowledge of architecture, its limitation and constraints with
opportunity.

Practicum is specially designed to develop the overall ability of a student and

come to grip with the realistic side of the architecture profession. Theoretical
education and training on design and construction, under assumed or hypothetical
condition is likely to make mistakes unless otherwise we work on the real project,
where the paper works comes on the ground. So practicum is a platform where we
get a chance to get experience and realistic approach in design and construction
work. It leads to increase our confidence in work and helps to do lesser mistakes in
the practical fields. The students not only gain the practical knowledge but also the
problem occurred in different field which helps to develop the confidence in
identifying and analyzing the real problem and makes able to develop our the
design methodology. Not only that, it also helps to build up the relation with
professional architects, and other professionals. It is full phase chance to interact
with the society, professionals and the constraints.

Practicum takes us deep down to earth from world of fanaticism. Here things
about the space orientation space organization in building as well as the other
parts like dealing with client are known. The various changing factors that are
visibly or invisibly applied over a design could be well understood here. Practical
works helps us to know what the subject really is. It is like a mirror. When we
teach a child, “ a for apple” he is only aware of the spelling and remains unknown
of the apple itself, only if he were to be given an apple to study it then only will he
know the shape , the essence and richness in flavor of the apple . Similarly, we, the
architectural student cannot visualize the space and other related concepts unless
we go through it, observe it and understand it. By dealing practically, we can
increase our thinking capacity with more nerve.

These factors come into light during the “practicum” session. This practicum
work of the student covers the architectural design, site experience, 3d modeling,
working drawing and other scope concerned to architecture. During these periods
of NPA, I have gained practical experience as well as the keys to act as a
professional architectural student. I had this wonderful experience of being
exposed to live field works where I could see the paper works taking shape, 90
days of practicum work enables us to work as a team and to perceive the
challenges in professional architectural field. Overall, it gives student a chance to
interact with everyone involved in the building profession. Thus, there is no doubt
that Practicum helps student to broaden his/her mind, towards new horizon.

2.1 OBJECTIVES OF PRACTICUM

The main objective of practicum is to train the students practically in order to help
them to face the challenges that they have to encounter in their professional life.
Practicum helps the individual to handle any type of project in a responsible and
efficient manner. This may be done by understanding the project, understanding
the client and his requirements and overcoming the problems that come in the way
of designing. This report is prepared to share some of my experiences during the
90 day working of practicum period. It contains informative and valuable
knowledge that I have gained and collection of that I have done. It also includes
history management and the process of work distribution of the office that I work.
The main objectives of practicum can be listed as below:
 Acquaint a student with office and to upgrade the student in architecture
field to act as a professional architect.
 Familiarize with the organization process, project management, and legal
procedures
 To learn professional constraints in the fields of architecture and new
technique of construction in terms of   time, money, technology and so on.
 Reveal the problems that may arise during and after the designing process
and enable us to solve real life architectural problem in a better way.
 Capable to handle any type of works and to bear the duties and
responsibilities of the professional architect confidently.
 Enable us to deal with different kinds of peoples.

ABOUT THE FIRM

2.2 SELECTION OF THE FIRM

To get the practical knowledge about architecture, B. Arch. Course has introduced
practicum as one semester course on IV th year IInd part. For this we have to select
an office on our own. Initially I had no fixed plans about joining any particular
consultancy. However, a vague idea to work in small consultancy with limited
number of staffs was still in my mind. I had expected homely environment and
much guidance in such firm. As such, with the suggestion from my uncle Ar.Neel
Kamal Chapagain to join NPA located near my place, I selected this firm. And I
was accepted as the trainee there. Working 3 months, I found this consultancy not
less than my expectance, rather much more.

2.3 OFFICE ENVIRONMENT

This office is located at a peaceful environment away from the disturbing traffic,
where the working environment is serendipity, though people find it quite uneasy to
find the office as is located inside an ally. At NPA,where the best of working
atmosphere was present, not only were the staffs friendly and welcoming but also
eager to teach and share ideas with one another.

Guidance and inspiration of all seniors and cooperative friends always encourage
us to complete our task at time with best output. The chief architect acquaints with
the progress of the work by regular interaction with all the staff in regular interval.
Presently there are staffs including architects, civil engineers and also some trainee
architects. They helped me a lot to do my job in a better way. My senior architects
guided me to understand how we have to work in professional field, how we should
deal with clients, how and what we have to observe in construction field, and so
many other think linked with professional work.

It is not only place to learn design process and technology, but also place to learn
discipline, manner, punctuality, duties and responsibilities.

sketch as per client requirements.
Talking about the team of the firm, currently it consists of two architects, a civil

the office and library are on the upper floors which were damaged by earthquakes
for which the renovation was taking place.

Observation:-

 During the visit, I learned about Dachha, Lakhang (main soul of monastery
which is the shrine hall having height up to two floor height)
 Wax statue was installed from japan.
 Elements used had its own significance like highly decorative pillars.
 Bell in the main building was rung to holler for everyone in the monastery
 Courtyard system in the main building was the main theme such as to gather
sunlight from all direction
 Gods are placed in all four direction representing protection from god from
all direction
 Scaffolding was done on the statue as to re-construct it and make it
stabilized
 Comprises of private prayer hall ,where a separate office consisted, which
used tapered pillars.
 Comparatively, the riser of this building was higher than other monasteries.
 Use of vibrant colors and elements
 Scenery with tress and bushes surrounded the building as to buffer noise to
create a peaceful environment
 The students volunteer to do tasks as fitting gems in fountain themselves
after the damage done by the earth
3.6 SITE VISIT TO AMITABHA MONASTERY
AMITABHA MEDITATION CENTRE
Location: Kapan
Area:
Building Type: Meditation Centre
Building Status: Renovation

Description:
It falls under the meditation monastery, located far from the residential area and
noise. The main façade has huge pavilions. The main terrace to the entrance is
used for different programs like dancing during festival time where underneath
water reservoir is kept for rain water harvesting. The basement floor is for
parkings, first floor for office and mess purposes. The monastery also comprises of
sets of hanging cottages for meditators attached with small pantry and water
cabine, also a terrace.

Observation:
 The place was damaged due to earthquake and the renovation was taking
place
 Access to the road is uneasy and the long walkway to centre is exhausting
 The theme of the building symmetry
 Use of large solar panels where a large place is separated for solar panels
 As no building beside, light and air circulation is abundant
 Contour land is designed properly relative to design
 Walls are protected with for stronger resistant to weathering
 Only place where 3 double door used in Nepal
 First the carving is done then painted manually and elements are placed
and only is the finishing done
 Cracks near windor and beam
 While supervising we found that the designs however approved by the client
they make neseccary changes with elements for their religious purpose and
resulting in lower stability
 Bhairab, as of hindu (combined) statue are placed on all direction
 Elements used from japan as cornices
 Pictorial symbols as mantras for prayer to god
 Use of turtle, monkey’s face, fish tails etc. in the door serving different
purposes

 Use of wood in window door
 Modeling work

Sanitary
 Size of tile
 Slpe ratio
 Size and posiyion of trap
 Better position of fixtures
 Types of flooring done
 Slab is larger in size for placement of pipes underneath

 The shorter the pipeline the lesser the cost, better placement of hot and
cold water pipelines through walls while soil and waste pipelines
through floors
 Usually left contains hot water and right cold wwater
 During the placement of hot/cold water pipe if a pillar is obstructed then
the pipe encircles the pillar perimeters
 Size of pipe line used in toilets
 The soil and waste pipe must not intersect one another, however in the
ground floor as the size is unlimited underneath, the intersecting is
plausible
 Symbol of the pipelines
 Finishing of flooring in toilet
Electrical
 Learned to fix lighting fixtures in room
 Learned about the distribution board system
 Learned about earthing
 Learned about the symbols and the meaning used for electrical fixings

Meeting about the interior:-
I had a meeting with the renowned interior designer, about the interior details in
the residence of the residential building. I was privileged to talk to him about my
design. I was informed about how interior may effect the exterior of the building. I
have had several changes in my design after the meeting till I met his
requirements. He suggested me to leave of about 2 feet or more spaces on either
adjacent side of door as to keep storage which resulted in minimal use of space.
We had a discussion about how I should place my attic as to meet his demand. We
had quite a talk on the color of interior and the lighting systems to be used.
Though there were some clashes we both had a final agreement to the design. And
I consider myself lucky to have worked with him as he has expanded my horizon
about the interiors of the building.
3d interior:
The placement of furnitures, the type of material, colours, textures, use of different
synthetics, fabrics, etc.

CONCLUSION:

My practicum has become a great learning experience for me. I learnt new things
with the architects. My involvement in various project is magnifying me to be an
architect. This whole project included the designing task, drafting architectural and
interior, etc. some time we got pressure to finish the work on time but no matter it’s
a learning period and we have to do. This all help me to broaden my knowledge and
the understanding this field of architecture. It enable  to develop a vision I would
never have from my classroom studies. During any project, I got chance to expose
myself to this projects and every projects has lead to the innovative ideas and
helped me to be more confident.
The ideas and views that I get from Ar. Prabin Laghu will be in my mind
in my whole life. These are very meaningful for designing any kind of building.
Hence, this practicum period has helped me understand the architectural field not
only as a student but also as a professional.
